Is MW4 Worth It? What We Know Before the October 23 Launch

Is MW4 worth it? It depends on what you play. Here is what $69.99 gets you, what is still unproven after the beta, and who should wait before buying Modern Warfare 4.

Is MW4 Worth It? What We Know Before the October 23 Launch

It depends on what you play. Modern Warfare 4 doesn't launch until October 23, 2026, so there are no final reviews yet. From what's confirmed so far, it looks like good value at $69.99 if you play multiplayer or DMZ. It's a harder sell if you only play Warzone, which is free, or if you were counting on Game Pass, because MW4 isn't on Game Pass at launch.

That's the honest answer to "is MW4 worth it" with about two weeks to go. Everything below comes from official announcements, store listings and the August open beta, and we flag anything that isn't confirmed. If what worries you most is the post-launch grind rather than the game itself, you have three realistic options: public matches, private matches, or self-play MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99. We cover the trade-offs further down.

What $69.99 actually buys you

Verdict: three full modes on day one, which is more than most recent CoD launches.

  • Campaign. A North Korean invasion story following Private Park and Captain Price, with stops in New York, Paris and Mumbai. If you pre-order digitally, you can start it on October 16, a week early. For playtime estimates, see our MW4 campaign length guide.
  • Multiplayer. 12 Core 6v6 maps, including Cachette, Lithium, Lotus, Rooftops, Silkworm and Transit 213 (all six were in the beta), plus Mumbai, Reactor U92 and others. Kill Block is a new map type set inside the Westbridge Training Facility, and its layout changes between rounds. Hardcore versions are confirmed at launch for TDM, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, FFA and Search & Destroy.
  • DMZ. An extraction mode set on the Hajin map. If you die, you lose the gear you were carrying and your Operator, though you can pay to get the Operator back. It has its own 1-70 progression track and a Forward Operating Base hub.

The Vault Edition ($99.99) adds two Operator packs, the Signature Weapon Collection, one season of BlackCell and a DMZ Deployment Bonus. If you own a Call of Duty released since 2019, you can get 10% off it. It's only worth it if you were going to buy BlackCell anyway. You don't need it to play DMZ.

What's still unproven

Verdict: the time-to-kill (TTK) is the biggest open question.

  • TTK. Infinity Ward said after the beta that it isn't fully satisfied with TTK and will keep tuning weapons before launch. Forbes reviewed the beta and felt TTK actually got worse in Weekend 2, while spawns got better. Nobody knows yet which version ships on launch day.
  • Aim assist. The developers have also said their beta aim assist changes weren't where they wanted them, and more changes are coming.
  • DMZ. The mode wasn't in the beta. The flagship mode has never been tested by the public, so judge it after launch, not from trailers.
  • Warzone timing. Most sources say MW4 content comes to Warzone in Season 1, alongside the Hajin Battle Royale map and Zodiac Resurgence. Activision hasn't published a Season 1 date, and one outlet reported the change happens on launch day. Treat that as unconfirmed.
  • Switch 2. Most current listings include Switch 2 at launch, but an earlier report said that version would come later. Check the eShop listing before you count on it.

On PC, you'll need TPM 2.0, Secure Boot and about 115 GB of SSD space. On Xbox, online multiplayer still requires a Game Pass Essential subscription on top of buying the game. Both are costs that are easy to miss.

Hype isn't a review. If you're on the fence, waiting 48 hours after launch for reports on servers and TTK costs you nothing. The game will still be $69.99 on October 25.

Buying on day one: pros and cons

Pros

  • You get the campaign a week early (October 16) with a digital pre-order
  • You start progression and camo grinds on day one, before the community has figured out the meta
  • DMZ is new for everyone, so nobody has a head start on gear
  • You get the Hunter Killer Operator skin for BO7 and Warzone with every pre-order

Cons

  • TTK and aim assist are still being tuned, so the game you buy may not match the beta you played
  • DMZ hasn't been tested by the public at all
  • No Game Pass at launch, and Xbox online still needs a separate subscription
  • Launch-week servers are rarely smooth. Our launch errors guide covers the usual fixes

Related questions

Is MW4 on Game Pass? Not at launch. Microsoft's own store page says it isn't eligible. Some outlets expect it to be added later, but that hasn't been announced. Eligible members can get a discount on the Vault Edition.

Is DMZ free in MW4? No. Unlike the 2022 DMZ beta, it's included with MW4 and you need to own the game. There's no standalone DMZ purchase, and the $69.99 Standard Edition is enough.

Do I need MW4 to play Warzone? No. Warzone stays free on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Buying MW4 gets you multiplayer, campaign and DMZ.

Is the Vault Edition worth the extra $30? Only if you were going to buy Season 1 BlackCell anyway. If you mainly play the campaign, Standard is all you need.

The bottom line

MW4 looks like Infinity Ward's most complete launch in years: three modes, 12 new maps and a properly rebuilt DMZ. Two big things are still unknown: the final TTK and how DMZ plays. Multiplayer players can buy with reasonable confidence. Everyone else loses nothing by waiting for launch-week impressions.

If you do buy it, mastery camos and weapon levels across 12 maps and three modes add up to dozens of hours in public lobbies. Private matches are one free way to cut that down. Another is our MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99, which let you farm weapon XP and challenges against bots instead of sweaty lobbies.
