Activision and Infinity Ward haven't published an hours-to-beat figure, but the studio calls this probably the biggest Modern Warfare campaign it has made, so a first run will likely take about 8–10 hours, longer than the 5–8 hours of the recent trilogy. • Developer comments: in a Game Rant interview, Infinity Ward said this is probably the biggest Modern Warfare campaign the studio has built. COGconnected's preview reported the same message: larger than earlier entries, but built so you can play in shorter sessions.
• Third-party estimates: a few guide sites list 8–9 hours for a standard run. They don't link to any official source, so treat that as an educated guess.
• Media speculation: Game Rant guessed it could reach 10+ hours based on the developer's comments. That's also a guess.

So the honest answer is 8–10 hours on Regular, with a wide margin for error until launch.

MWIII is the low point. Many players called its campaign the shortest in the series. MW4 only has to beat roughly 5 hours to count as an improvement, and the developer's comments suggest it will by a clear margin.

How many missions are in the MW4 campaign?

Verdict: probably 13, but reports conflict.

Windows Central's coverage of the May 28 reveal said the campaign has 13 missions across three acts. Several guide sites still say Activision hasn't confirmed a mission count, and only a couple of missions have been named publicly. One is Entrenched, set in Hajin City, South Korea, which was playable in the August beta. Count 13 as likely but not locked in.

The story jumps between two groups. One is Private Park's squad, a mix of young South Korean soldiers and US Marines fighting off a North Korean invasion. The other is a rogue Captain Price. Missions are confirmed in Korea, New York, Paris and Mumbai. Previews describe big set pieces: a car chase through Paris, a nightclub assassination in New York, and a late-game assault on a nuclear facility with tanks, trenches and drones.

What changes how long it takes you

Verdict: difficulty and how much you explore matter far more than mission count.

MW4 has four difficulty settings: Recruit, Regular, Hardened and Veteran. These are our rough planning numbers, not official figures:

• Story rush on Recruit/Regular: the low end, around 7–8 hours if the 8–10 hour estimate is right.
• Normal run on Regular: roughly 8–10 hours.
• Veteran: add several hours for checkpoint restarts. Some sections will make you replay the same fight over and over.
• Completionist (intel, side objectives, achievements): low-to-mid teens is a fair guess.

The campaign is single-player only. There's no co-op this year, so you can't split the work with a friend.
