MW4 vs BO7: Which Should You Play in October 2026?
For most players, MW4 is the better choice from October 23, 2026. BO7 is in its final season. Here's who should switch, who should stay, and what carries over between the two.

For most players, MW4 is the one to play from October 23, 2026. Black Ops 7 is in its sixth and final season, and Modern Warfare 4 starts everyone over with a new campaign, 12 new 6v6 maps and DMZ. Stay on BO7 only if you want round-based Zombies, play through Game Pass, or are still on a PS4 or Xbox One.
Switching has a cost. Your BO7 weapon levels, camos and blueprints don't carry into MW4, so every player starts from zero on launch day. You can level weapons in public matches, in private matches, or in something like our MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99. The grind is the same no matter which game you came from.
MW4 vs BO7: Which Should You Play?
Verdict: MW4 for anyone who mainly plays Multiplayer or Warzone. BO7 for Zombies players and Game Pass players. Here's how the two compare as of October 6, 2026:
| Black Ops 7 | Modern Warfare 4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Release | November 14, 2025 | October 23, 2026 |
| Developer | Treyarch | Infinity Ward |
| Current state | Season 6 (final), live since Sept 17 | Launches in 17 days, Season 1 shortly after |
| Movement | Omnimovement, wall jumps | Forward-only sprint, slide, dive, ledge hang and shimmy |
| Third mode | Round-based Zombies | DMZ extraction (20 squads of up to 3) |
| Platforms | PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC | PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Switch 2 |
| Game Pass | Yes | Not at launch |
| Launch price | — | $69.99 Standard |
The biggest difference is how they feel to play. BO7 kept the fast omnimovement from BO6. MW4 goes back to the grounded Modern Warfare style: you can only sprint forward, wall-jumping is gone, and new climbing (grabbing pipes, shimmying along ledges) is slow and leaves you exposed. MW4 also removes hipfire bloom, the accuracy penalty for shooting from the hip. If you liked moving at full speed in any direction, MW4 will feel slow. That's on purpose.
Who should stay on BO7
Verdict: stay if you want something MW4 doesn't have.
- Zombies players. MW4 has no Zombies at all. DMZ takes its place as the third mode. BO7's Season 6 added the Tenshu Survival map and new Super Easter Egg rewards, including The Warden as a playable operator. Our guide on whether MW4 has Zombies covers what you get instead.
- Game Pass subscribers. BO7 is included with Game Pass. MW4 isn't at launch, so switching means paying full price.
- PS4 and Xbox One owners. MW4 doesn't run on last-gen consoles. That's it.
- Players with unfinished grinds. BO7 camos and operator unlocks stay in BO7.
Anything you want from BO7 is worth finishing now, while lobbies are still full.
Who should move to MW4
Verdict: most Multiplayer, Warzone and extraction-shooter players.
- Warzone players. From Season 1, Warzone brings in MW4 content and seasonal progression. Older blueprints, operators and skins still work in Warzone, but legacy camos don't.
- DMZ fans. DMZ is available from day one, not added in a later update. It's set in the Hajin Exclusion Zone and has story missions, side-ops and free roam.
- Anyone who wants a fresh start. New maps, new modes (Inflation, Hijack, Collateral, Counter Attack) and a progression reset for everyone.
Early numbers point to a bigger player base. Alinea Analytics estimated MW4 Steam pre-sales at nearly 400,000 two months before launch, about double what BO7 pre-sold on Steam by its launch. That's an analyst estimate, not an official Activision figure. Part of the gap is that MW4 isn't on PC Game Pass.
Switching to MW4 at launch: pros and cons
Pros
- Everyone starts at zero, so the camo and leveling race is fair
- 12 brand-new 6v6 maps plus Kill Block, a Gunfight map whose layout keeps changing
- Full Warzone integration from Season 1
- Built for current-gen hardware only
Cons
- No Zombies
- $69.99 and not on Game Pass at launch
- No PS4 or Xbox One version
- Final matchmaking setup still not confirmed (see below)
What carries over from BO7 to MW4
Verdict: currency and tokens carry over. Progress doesn't.
Your weapons, weapon progress, camos, blueprints and operators stay in BO7. What does carry forward, as long as you stay on the same platform, is your COD Points and any unspent 2XP tokens. The only cosmetic exceptions are the MW4 pre-order rewards you could already use in BO7: the Hunter Killer operator and the two pre-order camos.
Got 2XP tokens sitting unused in BO7? Keep them. They transfer to MW4 on the same platform, and launch week, when every weapon starts at level 1, is when they're worth the most.
The matchmaking question
Verdict: nobody outside Infinity Ward knows the final launch setup.
The MW4 beta ran two systems side by side: the skill-based Classic Matchmaking, and an Open playlist based on the one BO7 introduced. Infinity Ward has said MW4 won't go straight back to the strict matchmaking used before BO7. Since the beta, co-studio head Mark Grigsby has pointed players to official @CallofDuty posts and given no new details. If matchmaking is the deciding factor for you, wait for launch-week info before buying.
Related questions
Do you need BO7 to play MW4? No. MW4 is a standalone game with its own campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ. Owning BO7 gives you no discount and no access.
Is MW4 on Game Pass? Not at launch, according to Xbox's store page. BO7 is still on Game Pass.
Will BO7 get more content after MW4 launches? It's not likely. Season 6 is widely expected to be BO7's last major update, and no Season 6 Reloaded has been confirmed.
Can you play MW4 before October 23? Only the campaign, and only if you pre-order. Campaign early access opens October 16. Our MW4 campaign early access guide explains who qualifies.
If you switch, expect to level every weapon and chase every camo again from scratch, and that takes a lot of evenings. Private matches and the Open playlist are free ways to soften it. If you want lobbies built purely for farming XP, our MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99 are another option.
