Does MW4 Have Zombies? No, and Here's What You Get Instead
No. Modern Warfare 4 has no Zombies mode, round-based or open-world. Here's what's confirmed, what DMZ offers in its place, whether a Halloween zombie event could still happen, and where Zombies players should go now.

No, Modern Warfare 4 does not have Zombies. Infinity Ward has not announced a round-based mode, an open-world MWZ-style mode or any Zombies mode at all. MW4 launches on October 23, 2026 with three pillars: Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ, the returning extraction mode.
If you mainly bought Call of Duty for the undead, that's a real loss. The less obvious loss is for camo grinders. Zombies was where a lot of players went to level weapons quietly, without sweaty lobbies. In MW4 that grind moves to Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. If you want a low-pressure way to farm, you can play objective modes, run DMZ contracts or use MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99 to grind weapon XP against AI.
Does MW4 have Zombies at launch? The confirmed mode list
Verdict: three modes, no Zombies. Every official MW4 reveal so far, from the announcement to the editions breakdown to the DMZ deep dive, has covered Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ. None of them mention Zombies. Activision usually promotes a Zombies mode loudly and early. This year it hasn't promoted one at all.
| Mode | In MW4? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Confirmed | Set on the Korean Peninsula |
| Multiplayer | Confirmed | 12 new maps at launch, new progression system |
| DMZ | Confirmed | PvPvE extraction on the Hajin map, included in the full game |
| Warzone | Integrated | Continues as the free battle royale with MW4 content added |
| Round-based Zombies | Not in the game | No announcement or teaser |
| MWZ-style open-world Zombies | Not in the game | DMZ takes over its slot |
| Halloween zombie limited-time mode | Unconfirmed | Possible, but nothing announced |
One detail feeds a lot of hopeful Reddit threads. Treyarch, the studio behind Zombies, is one of roughly ten support studios helping Infinity Ward on MW4. Supporting development is not the same as building a Zombies mode, though, and nothing suggests Treyarch is making one for this game.
Why MW4 skipped Zombies
Verdict: Zombies is Treyarch's mode, and MW4 belongs to Infinity Ward. Round-based Zombies has always been a Black Ops staple. Modern Warfare 3 (2023) broke that pattern with MWZ, an open-world mode that was basically DMZ with zombies added. MW4 removes the zombies and brings back the extraction mode underneath.
That also ends a streak. MW3, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 all shipped with some form of Zombies. MW4 is the first game since then to ship without any.
Is DMZ a good replacement for Zombies?
Verdict: it fills the same "not 6v6" slot, but it's a different kind of game. DMZ is a PvPvE extraction shooter. You drop into Hajin, an exclusion zone on the Korean Peninsula that borders Russia and North Korea, after a reactor meltdown. You loot, finish contracts and try to get out alive. You can fight AI enemies, hunt other human squads, or do some of both. The story picks up after the campaign ends. Points of interest include an irradiated reactor, a prison complex and a casino with a vault you can break into.
Unlike DMZ in MW2, this version is part of the paid game, not a free Warzone side mode.
Pros of DMZ for Zombies fans:
- You still get co-op squad play against AI enemies on a big map
- Contracts and loot runs feel similar to MWZ's progression
- It has a full launch map and story, not a stripped-down beta like 2022
- You can avoid other players and play it mostly as PvE
Cons:
- Other human squads can wipe you and take your gear, which never happened in round-based Zombies
- There are no Easter eggs, wonder weapons, Pack-a-Punch or GobbleGums
- No round-based survival loop at all
- Losing gear on extraction punishes mistakes far more than going down in Zombies
Bottom line: DMZ is a closer match for MWZ than for classic round-based Zombies. If you loved MWZ, you'll probably settle in. If you loved high-round Easter egg runs, you won't.
DMZ also counts toward weapon progression and has its own mastery camos. Our guide on MW4 DMZ weapon progression explains how DMZ leveling compares with Multiplayer.
Could zombies show up later in MW4?
Verdict: a full Zombies mode is unlikely, and a Halloween cameo is possible but unconfirmed. As of early October 2026, there's no sign of Zombies being added after launch, and leaving it out looks deliberate. Call of Duty has a long history of Halloween "Haunting" events, including Zombie Royale in Warzone back in 2020. Some outlets think a spooky limited-time mode could reach MW4 or Warzone. That's speculation, not an announcement. Treat any "MW4 Zombies leak" as rumor until Activision confirms it.

Where can I play Zombies right now? Black Ops 7. Season 6, The Haunting, is widely reported to be BO7's last major seasonal update before MW4. If you have unfinished Zombies Easter eggs or camos, the weeks before October 23 are your best window, while the player base is still there.
Does my Black Ops 7 Zombies progress carry into MW4? No. MW4 uses a brand-new progression system, so BO7 weapon levels and mastery camos stay in BO7. Reported carry-overs are limited to COD Points, unused 2XP tokens and specific pre-order items such as the Hunter Killer Operator skin. Your BO7 unlocks stay usable in BO7 itself.
Can I still grind camos without sweaty Multiplayer lobbies? Yes, but you'll need a different spot than Zombies. MW4's mastery camos come in sets for Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ. Our shared camo track explainer covers which modes count toward what. DMZ against AI and objective-heavy playlists are the closest thing to a calm, Zombies-style grind.
Is MW4 worth buying if I only play Zombies? Probably not at launch. If Zombies is the only reason you buy Call of Duty each year, this one won't scratch that itch. Stick with BO7 or wait to see what Treyarch announces next.
Without Zombies, every MW4 weapon level and camo has to come from Multiplayer, DMZ or Warzone. That's a lot of hours against real players. If you want that grind to feel more like the old low-pressure Zombies sessions, our MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99 are one way to farm weapon XP and camo progress against AI at your own pace.
