MW4 Shared Camo Track Explained: Does Every Mode Count?
Yes. Every MW4 weapon has one Camo Track that fills up in Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone, but each mode still has its own three mastery camos. Here's what's shared, what isn't, and what's still unconfirmed.

Yes. In Modern Warfare 4 each weapon has one Camo Track, and it fills up whether you play Multiplayer, DMZ or Warzone, but finishing it only opens that weapon's mastery challenges, and each mode keeps its own three mastery camos. That's the MW4 shared camo track explained in one line. The base grind is pooled across modes. The endgame is not. If you plan to push early tracks in Multiplayer, our MW4 Bot Lobbiesfrom $4.99 are one way to put lots of kills on a single gun. Plenty of players will just grind it in normal matches, though, and that works fine.
Below is what Infinity Ward has confirmed, what's still missing, and how the system should change the way you plan your launch weeks.
MW4 Shared Camo Track Explained: What Activision Confirmed
Verdict: the shared track is official. The details aren't out yet.
The confirmation came at Call of Duty: NEXT on August 21, 2026. The official multiplayer systems blog says the weapon camo journey "spans Multiplayer, DMZ, and Call of Duty: Warzone." You progress each weapon's Camo Track across all three to unlock its Mastery Camo Challenges. Each mode has three mastery camos, so there are nine in total.
Here's how that breaks down:
- One track per weapon. A Kastov 762 has a single camo progress bar. Kills in DMZ, Multiplayer and Warzone all feed that same bar.
- No re-grinding the base tiers. You don't restart the early camos when you switch modes. Older games made you pick one mode and stay there, and MW4 drops that.
- Mastery is split by mode. Once the track is done, the gun's mastery challenges open, and each mode has its own set.
Pro tip: Because the base track is shared, grind it in whichever mode gives you the most kills per hour with that gun. That doesn't have to be the mode whose mastery camo you want most.
What's Shared and What Isn't
Verdict: the base tiers are pooled, the mastery camos are not.
| Element | Shared across modes? | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Per-weapon Camo Track | Yes (MP, DMZ, Warzone) | Officially confirmed |
| Multiplayer mastery (Mercurial Drift → Polyatomic Reforged → Orion Reforged) | No, Multiplayer only | Names revealed, requirements unpublished |
| Warzone mastery (Parallax → Damascus Reforged → Empyros) | No, Warzone only | Names revealed, requirements unpublished |
| DMZ mastery (Chiral → Ripple Tide → Helio) | No, DMZ only | Names revealed, requirements unpublished |
| Pyroclast Prestige camos | Separate track entirely | Tied to Prestige, not the Camo Track |
| Attachments | Unlock once, usable across the arsenal | Part of weapon progression, not camos |
The catch is simple. Finishing Orion Reforged on a gun does not give you Empyros or Helio. Each mode's mastery line has to be completed on its own. For the full set of names and how they're grouped, see our MW4 mastery camos list for all modes.
One honest flag: sources disagree on the size of the Prestige set. Some early write-ups listed three Pyroclast camos. Later reporting and our own store list four: Pyroclast, Verge, Scatter and Cascade. Either way, they sit outside the shared Camo Track.
What's Still Not Confirmed
Verdict: we have the structure, but not the numbers.
Activision has not published:
- Kill counts, headshot targets or other challenge requirements for any camo tier
- How many tiers the Camo Track has before mastery opens
- Whether you need to finish a set number of weapons in a class (the old "master X weapons" gate) to unlock later mastery camos
- Whether all launch weapons are eligible, or how DLC weapons will be added
Any site quoting exact numbers right now is guessing. The real list arrives on October 23.
The Warzone Timing Problem
Verdict: on launch day the track is effectively shared across two modes, not three.
Multiplayer and DMZ launch on October 23, 2026. Warzone only takes on MW4 content and progression from Season 1, and Activision hasn't given an exact date for that. Community estimates range from early November, when Black Ops 7's final season ends on November 4, to December. Treat both as guesses. We break down that clue in our MW4 Season 1 start date guide.
At launch, then, the only places to feed the Camo Track should be Multiplayer and DMZ. It's reasonable to expect that Warzone progress will start counting once the integration goes live, but nobody can show you that until Season 1 arrives.
Pro tip: If you want Parallax, Damascus Reforged or Empyros, use the pre-Season 1 window to clear the shared track in Multiplayer or DMZ. When Warzone integrates, you can head straight into its mastery challenges instead of starting the base grind there.
How This Changes Your Grind
Verdict: you'll spend less time on the early tiers and the same effort on mastery.
In practice, the shared track means:
- Play the mode you like. A DMZ player and a 6v6 player both make camo progress. Nobody has to sit in a playlist they hate just to farm camos.
- Plan the mastery mode early. Mastery is per mode, so pick the set you actually want. Going after all nine at once on day one is how weapons end up half-finished in three places.
- Stack it with weapon leveling. Under MW4's weapon progression, attachments unlock once for your whole arsenal, so time spent on a gun counts toward more than its camo bar.
It's still a long grind. It just doesn't make you repeat the early tiers anymore.
Related questions
Do MW4 camos carry over from Black Ops 7 or MW3? Not into MW4 itself. Weapons, levels and earned mastery camos start fresh. In Warzone, Activision has said older weapons, along with the blueprints and camos you earned for them, stay usable from Season 1 through Carry Forward.
Are there camo challenges in the MW4 beta? No. Beta rewards were mostly calling cards, emblems and similar items, there was no Camo Track, and DMZ wasn't playable in the beta.
Does DMZ weapon XP count toward the Camo Track? DMZ is one of the three confirmed modes that feed the shared track. How DMZ weapon leveling compares with Multiplayer leveling is a separate question, and we cover it in our DMZ progression guide.
Do the Pyroclast camos use the shared Camo Track? No. The Pyroclast set is tied to Prestige progression, separate from the nine mode mastery camos.
Even with the shared track, finishing a weapon's Camo Track and then three separate mastery lines is a lot of hours. If you'd rather not do all of that in public lobbies, our MW4 Bot Lobbiesfrom $4.99 let you work through the Multiplayer side at your own pace, and normal matches will get you there too.
