Best MW4 Season 1 Maps for XP and Camos (Shipment, Shoot House & More)

Shipment is the best MW4 Season 1 map for weapon XP, and it's Activision's own pick for early weapon ranks. Shoot House, Backstab and Canyon each suit different guns and camo challenges. Here's what to queue.

Best MW4 Season 1 Maps for XP and Camos (Shipment, Shoot House & More)

Shipment is the best MW4 Season 1 map for weapon XP. It's small, it's nonstop, and Activision's own Season 1 post tells players to use its "relentless pace of engagements to level up those crucial early Weapon ranks." Of the three new launch maps, Shoot House suits close-range guns like the CSG-35, Backstab suits ARs like the Cronen Osprey, and Canyon has a mix of open ground and tight spots. For modes, Grind and Drop Zone keep fights concentrated.

Season 1 maps ranked for leveling and camos

Verdict: Shipment for raw kills, then pick a launch map that fits your gun.

MapSize (official)StatusBest for
ShipmentSmall, 6v6Remaster, live since Oct 27Weapon XP, kill-count camos, SMGs and shotguns
Shoot HouseMedium, 6v6Reimagined, Season 1 launchClose and mid range; three clear lanes
BackstabMedium, 6v6New, Season 1 launchARs and long-range challenges
CanyonMedium, 6v6New, Season 1 launchMixed ranges: open Mesa plus a cave
Ministry, OverflowNot announcedMid-season—

Activision only describes the new maps as "medium." We stick to the layout details it published and don't guess at spawns or flow until the maps have been played.

Shipment: the official leveling map

Verdict: queue it first for any new gun.

Shipment is a small 6v6 map on a Russian harbor, boxed in by water and concrete panel buildings. Activision put it out on October 27 as a pre-season drop and recommends it for early weapon ranks before the Season 1 maps arrive. Expect constant fights, which suits both new guns while they're low-level. It's especially good for the CSG-35, whose recoil gets hard to control beyond about 20 meters.

Use it for: weapon XP, raw kill counts, and close-range camo challenges. Skip it for: longshot-style challenges. There's no room for range.

Shoot House: the familiar grind map

Verdict: the best of the new trio for steady, readable fights.

The reimagined Shoot House keeps the classic layout in snowy North Korea, with three main lanes. These are the southern Junkyard, the central tunnels and the northern Containers, plus an overhead Hospital and Apartment. Three predictable lanes means you know where fights happen.

Use it for: the CSG-35 in the central tunnels, and the Osprey covering the outer lanes.

Backstab: for the Cronen Osprey

Verdict: long sightlines make it the AR map.

Backstab is a brand-new snowy, war-torn town with abandoned tanks. It has long sightlines, several vantage points and blasted walls that open flank routes. That favors the Osprey, an 882 RPM AR, over an SMG.

Use it for: AR leveling and range-based camo challenges.

Canyon: the mixed-range map

Verdict: pick your spot to match your challenge.

Canyon is a brand-new medium map with sun-scorched terrain between "towering rock walls." It has a river, a Cliff Path, a northern Cave, an Abandoned Shack built for ambushes, and a central Mesa. The cave and shack suit close-range work. The Mesa and cliff path give you lines for the Osprey.

Use it for: switching between close and mid-range challenges in one match.

Which modes to play

Verdict: modes that pack players together beat spread-out ones.

ModeStatusHow it worksGood for
GrindLaunchKill players, collect dog tags, bank them at one of two BanksKills plus objective XP
Drop ZoneLaunchHold one rotating objective; airdrops bring killstreaksConcentrated fights, player XP
PossessionPre-season (Oct 29)Kill an enemy to possess them and take their loadoutFun, but you lose control of your loadout
InfectedPre-season (Oct 30)Survivors vs. InfectedCasual play; limited for gun-specific grinds
Gauntlet 1v1Launch (Wager Match)1v1 Gunfight playlistWager Match Trophies, not leveling

Grind rewards kills and makes you move to the Banks. Drop Zone pulls both teams onto one spot, so engagements stay frequent. Possession is a poor fit for leveling a specific gun, because killing someone swaps you into their loadout. Activision hasn't said how long the Halloween modes stay. Public maps vs. bot lobbies

Verdict: the best public map still loses to a lobby where the enemy team is bots.

Even Shipment comes with real opponents, matchmaking and lost gunfights (see MW4 SBMM and Open Moshpit). In MW4 Bot Lobbiesfrom $3.99, 5 bots sit on the enemy team for a full ~10-minute match, so you choose which kills you get. That makes it the faster option for kill-count camos, multi-kill challenges and maxing a fresh gun. Bot lobbies carry on into Season 1 for the new guns once you've unlocked them. They're available from day one, November 6.

Want a free-for-all setup instead? The MW4 FFA Nuke Lobbyfrom $29.99 is the other option. For builds, start from MW4 loadouts.

Quick answers

What is the best MW4 Season 1 map for XP? Shipment. Activision recommends it for leveling early weapon ranks because of its nonstop engagements.

What maps are in MW4 Season 1? Backstab and Canyon (new) and Shoot House (reimagined) at launch, all 6v6. Shipment has been live since October 27, and Ministry and Overflow are due mid-season.

Which map is best for the Cronen Osprey? Backstab, for its long sightlines. Shipment is still faster for raw weapon XP.

Which map is best for the CSG-35? Shipment or Shoot House's central tunnels, because the SMG struggles beyond about 20 meters.

What's the best mode for weapon XP in Season 1? Modes that keep fights concentrated, like Grind and Drop Zone. A bot lobby beats any public mode for kills per match.
