MW4 Season 1 Camo Grind: New Weapons, Camo Events and Bot Lobbies
The Season 1 guns (Cronen Osprey, CSG-35, later the JAK 12) start their camo tracks from zero. Weapon Camo events only need match XP, but the kill-based mastery challenges go fastest in bot lobbies.

Every new Season 1 gun starts its camo track at zero, so the Cronen Osprey and CSG-35 need the full kill-based grind from scratch. There are two kinds of camo to chase. Weapon Camo events only ask you to "play matches to earn XP," but mastery camos run on kill challenges. Kill challenges are exactly what bot lobbies speed up, so use them for the mastery grind and let the events tick along in the background.
What camos are new in Season 1
Verdict: four sources of camos this season, and the new guns plug into the same system as the launch guns.
| Source | How you earn it | Best approach |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon Camo events | Play matches and earn XP | Any mode; progresses while you level |
| Weapon Camo Track + mastery camos (new guns) | Kill-based challenges per weapon | High-kill matches, so bot lobbies |
| Wager Match mastery rewards | Earn Trophies (Gauntlet 1v1, MP, DMZ, Warzone challenges) | Play the event; rewards include a camo and Apex attachments |
| BlackCell Mastery Camo Track | Included with Season 1 BlackCell | Owners only |

Activision hasn't announced a separate camo system for Season 1 weapons. Expect the Cronen Osprey, CSG-35 and, later, the JAK 12 to use the same per-weapon shared Camo Track as the launch guns. Multiplayer and DMZ already count toward that track. With Warzone integration landing on November 6, Warzone kills are expected to feed it too. Our shared camo track explained guide covers how the track feeds each mode's mastery camos.
How mastery camos work on a new gun
Verdict: unlock the gun, finish its track, then open the mastery challenges.
- Unlock the gun. The Osprey is at Battle Pass Tier 16 and the CSG-35 at Tier 36. The JAK 12 comes from an in-season event.
- Clear the Camo Track. It uses kill-based challenges, and all modes count.
- Open the mastery challenges. Each mode has its own set, and they don't share progress.
Activision still hasn't published kill counts for camo tiers, and that includes the Season 1 guns. For what we know by class, see mastery camo challenges by weapon class. For overall time estimates, see how long mastery camos take.
Tip: level first, camo second, or do both at once. Leveling and camo progress are separate systems, but every kill counts toward both. Leveling first gets you the attachments (and the Apex at max level) that make later challenges easier. The CSG-35 especially gets hard to control beyond about 20 meters until it has attachments. Our guide to leveling the Cronen Osprey and CSG-35 fast covers that part.
Weapon Camo events: the easy part
Verdict: no special effort needed.
Activision describes the Season 1 Weapon Camo events as "play matches to earn XP and acquire Weapon Camos." That's XP, not kill counts with a specific gun. Any mode works, and anything that boosts your XP per match helps, including Double XP tokens and the squad bonus in the Joint Fire event. Event dates haven't been published, so check the in-game Events tab when the season starts.
Why bot lobbies are the fastest route for camos
Verdict: kill challenges are a kills-per-minute problem, and bot lobbies solve it.
Camo challenges are kill counts, and in Modern Warfare they're typically specific kinds of kills: headshots, kills while aiming, kills from behind, multi-kills and so on. In public Season 1 lobbies, much of every match goes to respawn timers and lost gunfights. Challenges like multi-kills are hard to set up against real players.
A bot lobbyfrom $3.99 gives you 5 bots on the enemy team for a full match of about 10 minutes. You pick the gun and the attachments for the challenge you're on, and you farm it. Progress counts like any other match, because it is one.
How many lobbies? Our how many bot lobby matches a camo grind takes guide works through the numbers. It estimates roughly 1–3 hours of bot lobbies for one weapon's set, compared with 15–30 hours in public matches. Those estimates are based on the launch weapons, and Activision hasn't published Season 1 requirements, so treat them as a ballpark until real counts are known. Tick off progress in the MW4 camo tracker so you know when to stop.
Two practical notes:
- Season 1 timing. Bot lobbies carry on into Season 1 and work for the new guns once you've unlocked them. They're available from day one, November 6.
- Lobby etiquette. In a standard lobby, one other customer may be on the enemy team farming the bots on your side. Leave them alone: don't shoot them, and don't use lethal or area killstreaks.
If you'd rather not do the camo grind at all, MW4 Camo Boostfrom $12.99 is the done-for-you option. Our camo boost vs bot lobbies comparison helps you pick.
Which maps and modes for public-match camo grinding
Verdict: small and busy for kill counts, Backstab for range challenges.
If you're grinding in public matches, Shipment's nonstop engagements are the obvious pick for kill counts. Activision recommends it for weapon ranks for the same reason. Backstab's long sightlines suit range-based challenges on the Osprey. For whether MP, DMZ or Warzone is fastest, see fastest mode for mastery camos and our best Season 1 maps for XP and camos.

Quick answers
Do the new Season 1 guns have mastery camos? Activision hasn't announced a different system, so expect them to use the same shared Camo Track and mastery challenges as the launch guns.
How do Weapon Camo events work in MW4 Season 1? You play matches and earn XP to unlock the event camos. No specific weapon kills are needed.
What's the fastest way to get camos on the Cronen Osprey? Unlock it at Tier 16, then farm its kill challenges where kills come fastest: bot lobbies, or Shipment in public matches.
How many bot lobbies does a camo grind take? Our estimate is roughly 1–3 hours per weapon, based on the launch guns. See our guide on bot lobby match counts for the breakdown.
Do Warzone kills count toward MW4 camos? MW4's camo track is shared across modes. Warzone joins it with integration in Season 1 on November 6.
