Fastest Mode for MW4 Mastery Camos: Multiplayer vs DMZ vs Warzone?

Multiplayer is likely the fastest mode for MW4's shared Camo Track. Each mode's mastery camos still have to be earned in that mode, Warzone only joins MW4 in Season 1, and Activision hasn't published the exact challenges yet.

Fastest Mode for MW4 Mastery Camos: Multiplayer vs DMZ vs Warzone?

Multiplayer is probably the fastest mode for mastery camos in MW4 multiplayer vs DMZ vs Warzone, but only for the shared Camo Track. Each mode's three mastery camos can only be earned in that mode, so no single mode gets you all nine. Activision also hasn't published the challenge counts yet. Anyone giving you an exact hours figure today is guessing.

Here's the short version. Do your base camo work in whichever mode gives you the most kills per minute, which should be 6v6 Multiplayer. Then finish each mastery path in its own mode. If skill-based matchmaking is what slows you down, softer lobbies are one option. Some players use private matches, and some use a service like our MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99. Plenty of players just grind public matches. All three work.

Fastest mode for mastery camos in MW4: Multiplayer vs DMZ vs Warzone

Verdict: Multiplayer for the shared track. Every mode for its own mastery set.

The "likely kill pace" row is our estimate based on how each mode type has played in past Call of Duty games. It isn't measured MW4 data. Nobody has that data yet because the full game launches on October 23, 2026.

Why "fastest mode" only covers half the grind

One bar per gun is shared. The finish lines are not.

Activision confirmed at Call of Duty: NEXT that every weapon has one Camo Track. It moves forward in Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone. Filling it unlocks that weapon's Mastery Camo Challenges, and those challenges are split by mode. Earning Orion Reforged gives you nothing toward Helio or Empyros.

So the speed question splits in two:

  • Base Camo Track: pick the fastest mode, since progress counts everywhere.
  • Mastery challenges: no choice. Multiplayer camos need Multiplayer, DMZ camos need DMZ, and Warzone camos need Warzone.

For how the shared bar works in more detail, see our shared Camo Track explainer. This article only looks at speed.

Multiplayer: the default speed lane

Most fights per minute wins, and Multiplayer has the most fights.

Respawn modes on small maps keep putting you back into gunfights within seconds. In past games, small maps like Shipment were the standard camo farms. Expect the same once MW4's map rotation and any 24/7 playlists are confirmed. The launch arsenal has 33 weapons: 24 primaries, 8 secondaries and 1 melee. That's a lot of bars to fill, so pace per gun matters.

Pros

  • Highest kill density of the three modes
  • Fast match loops, so less downtime between attempts
  • Easy to stack Double XP and Double Weapon XP tokens in short sessions
  • Live from day one

Cons

  • SBMM makes headshot and long-range challenges a slog for many players
  • Only advances the Multiplayer mastery set past the shared track
  • Repetitive. Twenty hours on one small map is a test of character.

DMZ: slower kills, safer progress

Not the fastest, but the most forgiving.

DMZ launches on day one on the Hajin Exclusion Zone. Weapon XP and camo progress earned in DMZ go to the same guns you use in Multiplayer. According to coverage of Activision's DMZ deep dive, you keep account XP and weapon XP even if a run ends in a failed extraction. That takes away the usual risk of losing a whole match's progress in an extraction mode.

The downside is pace. A DMZ session has missions, looting and travel time between fights. For the shared track, it's likely slower than Multiplayer per hour. For Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio you have to play it anyway. If you're deciding where to level guns, our DMZ vs Multiplayer weapon progression guide covers that question.

Warzone: not an option at launch

The slowest lane, and it doesn't open until Season 1.

Activision's announcement says Warzone starts integrating MW4 content and progression in Season 1. Some third-party sites claim Warzone integration goes live on October 23. That doesn't match the official wording, so go with the official version until the Season 1 date is announced. That date hasn't been published either.

Even after it opens, battle royale is a bad place to fill the base Camo Track. You get long rotations, few fights and one life. Use Warzone for Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros, and fill the shared bar somewhere faster.

The fastest plan isn't one mode. Fill the shared Camo Track where kills are cheapest, then take each gun into each mode only for that mode's mastery challenges.

What's still unconfirmed

More than most guides admit.

  • Exact challenge requirements for all nine mode camos: not published. That includes kill counts, headshot totals and how many weapons each tier needs.
  • Tier order: GamesRadar reports a per-weapon, then per-class, then all-weapons structure in each mode, for example Mercurial Drift → Polyatomic Reforged → Orion Reforged. That matches past Call of Duty patterns. Treat it as likely until the challenge list goes live in-game.
  • Season 1 date, which is also the Warzone start date: not announced.
  • Ranked Play date: not announced.

If DMZ ends up with easy AI-kill challenges, it could catch up with Multiplayer for some tasks. We'll know after launch.

Related questions

Do I need to grind every gun three times? Not for the base Camo Track, since it's shared across modes. You do need to complete each mode's mastery challenges separately to earn that mode's camos.

Can I start the camo grind during Campaign Early Access on October 16? No. Early Access is campaign only. Multiplayer and DMZ open on October 23, and Warzone gets MW4 content in Season 1.

Do Pyroclast camos come from any of these modes? No. The four Pyroclast camos are tied to Prestige progression, separate from the nine mode camos. Our Pyroclast unlock guide covers what's confirmed.

Do Double Weapon XP tokens matter for camos? Yes. You can't progress camo challenges on a gun you haven't leveled, so save tokens for focused grind sessions.

The bottom line

Filling the Camo Track on 33 weapons and then finishing three separate mastery paths will take a lot of hours, however you split your time between modes. If the SBMM part is what wears you down, our MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99 are one way to speed up the Multiplayer side. Grinding it out in public matches is still a perfectly good option.
