How Do You Unlock Pyroclast in MW4? (What's Confirmed)

You unlock Pyroclast in MW4 by Prestiging, but Activision hasn't published the exact requirement yet. This covers what's confirmed, where sources disagree, and how to prepare before the October 23 launch.

How Do You Unlock Pyroclast in MW4? (What's Confirmed)

You unlock Pyroclast in MW4 by Prestiging. It's the base camo of Modern Warfare 4's four Prestige Mastery camos. As of October 2, 2026, though, Activision hasn't published which Prestige level, path or challenge actually awards it. If you're searching "how to unlock Pyroclast MW4", you're looking for a number that doesn't exist yet, and any site that gives you one is guessing.

What we can say for sure: every Prestige starts at Soldier Rank 55, so the first step is the same no matter how the final requirement turns out. You can grind those 55 ranks yourself during the launch Double XP window, or hand the climb to our MW4 account leveling servicefrom $4.10 if your schedule is tight. Either way, here's what's confirmed and what's still speculation.

How to unlock Pyroclast in MW4: the confirmed route

Verdict: Prestige is the route. The exact milestone is still unknown.

Here's what Call of Duty has actually shown:

  • Pyroclast is a Prestige reward. It appeared in the official Prestige Mastery Camo Showcase at Call of Duty: NEXT on August 21, next to Pyroclast Verge, Pyroclast Scatter and Pyroclast Cascade.
  • It's not one of the mode camos. The nine Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone mastery camos come from each weapon's Camo Track. The Pyroclast set is a separate track.
  • Prestige has two paths. Regular Prestige sends you back to Level 1 but lets you keep your Create-a-Class unlocks. Classic Prestige is the old-school full reset with extra rewards. Activision says each path has its own rewards and milestones.
  • Nothing carries over. Rank, Prestige and camo progress from Black Ops 7 don't transfer. Everyone starts at Level 1 on October 23.

So here's how it works today: hit Rank 55, Prestige, and keep going. Exactly where Pyroclast lands on that ladder is still blank.

What's confirmed vs. what's reported

Verdict: the sources disagree, so don't trust any confident answer yet.

The conflicting reports matter. Some guides say the whole Pyroclast set unlocks at Prestige Master. Others think Pyroclast comes at your first Prestige and the higher tiers at later milestones. A few store pages describe it as per-weapon Prestige challenges. They can't all be right. Even the most recent GamesRadar guide says Classic Prestige is the path in one place and suggests Regular Prestige elsewhere.

Our read: Pyroclast is account-level Prestige progression, probably on the Classic path. Treat both of those as educated guesses until Infinity Ward publishes the Prestige reward track.

One more thing to watch for: don't mix this up with Black Ops 7's weapon prestige camos. MW4's Prestige camos are a new system, and the BO7 rules don't automatically apply.

How to prepare before the requirement drops

Verdict: rank up early. Rank 55 is required whatever the answer turns out to be.

  1. Push to Rank 55 fast. You can't Prestige before 55, so every Pyroclast theory starts here. Plan around the launch 2XP window; our MW4 launch plan covers the timing.
  2. Hold off on choosing your path. It isn't confirmed that you can switch from Regular to Classic later and still earn the rewards you skipped. If you want Pyroclast, Classic is the safer bet until that's clarified. Our breakdown of Classic vs. Regular Prestige goes through the tradeoffs.
  3. Level weapons along the way. Prestige XP and weapon XP come from the same matches. Progress on your Camo Track won't be wasted, even if it ends up having nothing to do with Pyroclast.
  4. Check the in-game Prestige menu on day one. The reward track will almost certainly be visible in-game on October 23. That's the first reliable source, and it'll be more accurate than any pre-launch guide, this one included.

Related questions

How many Prestige camos are in MW4? Four were shown: Pyroclast, Pyroclast Verge, Pyroclast Scatter and Pyroclast Cascade. Some early coverage counted 12 mastery camos instead of 13 because it missed Cascade. Our full MW4 mastery camos list has all 13.

Does Regular Prestige unlock Pyroclast? It hasn't been confirmed. Activision has only said Classic Prestige comes with additional rewards and both paths have their own milestones. Whether the Pyroclast set is Classic-only hasn't been announced.

What does Pyroclast look like? It's dark gunmetal and black with thin molten-green cracks, the most low-key version of the volcanic theme. The higher tiers get brighter and more broken up, ending with the glossy, magma-style Cascade.

Is the beta Litmus camo part of the Pyroclast set? No. Litmus was a separate beta reward for 1,500 Operator kills, and you can no longer earn it.

Whatever the final requirement is, Pyroclast sits behind 55 ranks and at least one Prestige reset, and that means hours of grinding before you even start on the camo. If you'd rather not spend that time, our Pyroclast camo unlockfrom $159.00 is one option: a verified booster plays it from launch day once the real requirement is public.
