MW4 Classic or Regular Prestige: Which Should You Pick?
Classic Prestige in MW4 relocks your Create-a-Class unlocks but pays out a higher XP rate and exclusive rewards; Regular keeps everything and gives no boost. Here's which path fits your playstyle at launch.

Pick Classic Prestigefrom $4.10 if you want the higher XP earn rate and the exclusive reward set; pick Regular Prestige if you refuse to give up your loadout unlocks — that relock is the entire difference between the two paths. Modern Warfare 4 offers two Prestige paths, and Classic is the traditional reset that relocks Create-a-Class progression in exchange for increased XP earn rates and exclusive Prestige rewards. Regular restarts you at Level 1 but leaves your level unlocks and Create-a-Class content intact.
That makes this a straight trade: speed and cosmetics versus convenience. If you go Classic, you are choosing to re-earn your guns, perks, equipment and killstreaks from scratch — which is exactly the grind most players underestimate, and exactly why our MW4 weapon leveling boostfrom $4.99 exists. Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on October 23, 2026.
The short version
Verdict first, details after.
- Classic Prestige — relocks Create-a-Class progression, grants an increased XP earn rate (reported as a 20% XP Boost), and unlocks the exclusive Prestige reward set.
- Regular Prestige — you restart at Level 1, keep all unlocks, and earn XP no faster than before.
- Both — feed the same long-term ladder. Activision says players enter Prestige at max Soldier Rank to earn exclusive rewards and continue progressing through additional ranks.
Community reporting on the Classic reward list points to a Classic Ghost skin, the SAS Ghost skin and a permanent unlock token, while the Regular track is credited with the SAS Ghost skin. Treat the exact bundle as reported, not final until Infinity Ward publishes the launch reward table.
What Classic Prestige actually costs you
The XP boost is not free money — it's a loan against your own loadout.
When Classic relocks Create-a-Class, every weapon, perk and killstreak that unlocks by Soldier Rank goes back behind the rank gate. You climb the rank ladder again with a stripped kit, and the early ranks are the least fun part of any Call of Duty because you're stuck with starter guns against players running whatever they want. The 20% bump softens the climb, but it does not skip it.
There's also a second progression track people forget. Account rank and weapon level are separate systems: your rank unlocks the gun, weapon level unlocks that gun's attachments, camos and its Apex Attachment. Apex Attachments are specialized unlocks earned by fully progressing a weapon, and they introduce modifications that can meaningfully change how that weapon handles, fires, or performs tactically. A rank reset does not hand you those back automatically, and Activision hasn't spelled out every interaction yet (more on that below).
Pro tip: If you plan to go Classic, max your favourite two or three guns before you prestige. Weapon progress is the part you actually feel in a gunfight — re-earning a rank unlock is just paperwork.
What Regular Prestige gives up
One line: comfort costs you the multiplier.
Regular is the right call if you play in short sessions, if you only have three or four loadouts you care about, or if you're running Ranked and refuse to touch a meta build mid-season. You keep your kit, you keep your attachments, and you still collect Prestige milestones. The downside is that without the increased earn rate you're grinding the additional ranks at base speed, which is a real cost when you're chasing Master Prestige.
Master Prestige permanently unlocks all multiplayer content, after which you keep climbing prestige levels from there — so the fastest realistic route to "never locked out of anything again" is Classic runs stacked with every multiplier you can find. Objective modes, match completion bonuses and Double XP windows all still stack on top of the Prestige rate; our breakdown of the fastest MW4 weapon leveling methods covers which modes actually pay per minute, and we've also looked at whether Double XP tokens carry over into MW4.
Pro tip: Never prestige into a dead XP week. Save the reset for a Double XP event so the relocked ranks come back at roughly half the normal cost in playtime.
Who should pick what
- Completionists and camo hunters — Classic. You want the rewards, the mastery track and the earn rate, and you're going to be in lobbies anyway.
- Casual players with 3-5 hours a week — Regular. Relocking your kit when you only play two nights a week is a fast way to stop playing entirely.
- Ranked and competitive players — Regular, or Classic only during the off-season. Losing a meta attachment mid-climb is self-sabotage.
- Players on a launch-window sprint — Classic, prestiged early, with XP farming in low-pressure lobbies. Controlled matches through MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99 are the cleanest way to re-earn a relocked kit without fighting through launch-week sweats.
What's still unconfirmed
Be honest about the gaps. Activision has confirmed that Classic Prestige resets level unlocks and Create-a-Class progression, but it has not confirmed whether individual weapon levels or Weapon XP also reset. Prestige becomes available after reaching max Soldier Rank, but the final launch Soldier Rank cap has not been officially announced, even though MW4 is described as returning to the traditional 55-rank military progression before Prestige, the same loop used in Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7. And while Prestige Mastery and an MW4 Prestige Mastery Camo have been shown, the exact levels and requirements to enter it haven't been revealed. Anyone promising you exact prestige XP numbers right now is guessing.
Related questions
Do I have to prestige at all in MW4? No. Prestige is optional on both paths. If you never touch it, you keep your unlocks and simply stop climbing the extra ranks — you just forfeit the Prestige rewards and, on the Classic side, the increased XP rate.
Does prestige progress carry across platforms? Cross-progression is confirmed for MW4, so your rank and unlocks follow your linked Activision account across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2. The game launches on those platforms on October 23, 2026, and is not coming to PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
Did the beta let me test prestige? Not really. The beta exposed the dual-path Prestige UI but ran under a reduced level cap well below 55, so nobody prestiged during the test — the full loop starts at launch. Unlocked Beta Rewards become available in the full game at launch, but beta progression itself does not carry over.
Can I switch paths later? Each prestige is its own decision point, so you aren't locked into one philosophy forever — Classic on one run, Regular on the next. Exact rules for repeating the choice haven't been fully documented, so check the in-game prompt before you confirm.
Going Classic means re-earning an entire Create-a-Class from Level 1, and on past Call of Duty XP curves that's dozens of hours of lobbies before your kit looks normal again. If you'd rather keep the rewards and skip the re-grind, our MW4 weapon leveling servicefrom $4.99 handles the XP work on your own account so your loadouts are ready when you want to play them. Prestige should cost you a reset, not your whole month.
