MW4 DMZ Weapon Progression: DMZ or Multiplayer Leveling?
Weapon progression in MW4 tracks across both Multiplayer and DMZ, and the camo track spans Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone for nine Mastery Camos per weapon. Here's how to split your grind between modes.

Weapon progression in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 tracks across Multiplayer and DMZ, so the XP you bank in the Hajin Exclusion Zone counts toward the same weapon levels you'd be climbing in Domination. Infinity Ward confirmed this directly in the official DMZ deep dive: Weapon Progression tracks across Multiplayer and DMZ. That's the single most important sentence in the whole progression system, and most players still haven't clocked it.
Camos are a different story, and a much bigger commitment. The Weapon Camo journey spans Multiplayer, DMZ and Call of Duty: Warzone — you progress each weapon's Camo Track across all three experiences to unlock its Mastery Camo Challenges, with three Mastery Camos to earn in each mode for nine total. Nine Mastery Camos per gun, across three modes, on a 33-weapon roster. That maths out to a grind measured in seasons, not weekends, which is exactly why our MW4 weapon leveling boostfrom $4.99 exists for the guns you actually care about.
What's confirmed about DMZ progression
Verdict: the plumbing is confirmed, the numbers are not.
Here's the officially published picture as of now, with MW4 landing on October 23, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S:
- Shared weapon XP. Weapon Progression tracks across Multiplayer and DMZ.
- Shared camo track. Multiplayer, DMZ and Warzone all feed the same Camo Track, with three Mastery Camos per mode.
- Same combat foundation. DMZ is built on the same foundation as MW4 Multiplayer — the refined movement, the full weapon complement, and Ballistic Authority gunplay.
- A real economy. DMZ Operators with enough in-game cash can buy additional specialized weaponry from the FOB's military supplier.
- Apex Attachments still sit at the top. Apex Attachments are specialized unlocks earned by fully progressing a weapon, and they don't occupy a normal Gunsmith slot — they go on top of your existing build. MW4 ships with 33 weapons and 28 Apex Attachments.
What nobody outside Infinity Ward has published: max weapon levels, XP curves, or per-mode XP rates. No public source has released max weapon levels or XP tables, so any "hours to max" figure floating around right now is a guess. If a site hands you a precise DMZ-versus-Multiplayer XP-per-hour chart today, it invented it.
Pro tip: Don't plan your whole grind around leaked XP tables. Plan it around what's confirmed — shared weapon progression and a three-mode camo track — because those structures won't change when the numbers get patched.
DMZ or Multiplayer: which should you grind?
Verdict: Multiplayer for raw weapon levels, DMZ for camo coverage and the stuff you can't get anywhere else.
Multiplayer is the efficient option for pure weapon XP and it always has been. Matches are short, engagements come every few seconds, and objective modes like Hardpoint and Domination keep bodies funnelling into the same three points on the map. Death costs you eight seconds, not your entire loadout.
DMZ trades density for value. Hajin is an Exclusion Zone shaped by the aftermath of the MW4 Campaign, combining narrative Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, player encounters and match-to-match progression. Key locations include an irradiated reactor, a prison complex, the ruins of Hajin City and a heavily defended military base. Long infils, big gaps between fights, and an extraction you can absolutely fumble.
So split it like this:
- Chasing attachments or an Apex Attachment on one gun? Multiplayer. Nothing beats six-minute matches for level throughput.
- Chasing the full nine Mastery Camos? You have to play DMZ and Warzone regardless. Three of those nine live behind each mode.
- Want loot, Story Missions and the FOB economy? DMZ, obviously — and your weapon levels still tick up while you do it.
- Levelling a launcher or a niche secondary? Multiplayer, every time. Sparse DMZ engagements are brutal for low-kill-count weapons.

Requirements and practical setup
DMZ doesn't hand you a shortcut past the unlock ladder. Weapons still come from Player Rank progression, and Gunsmith access still follows the weapon, not the mode. In DMZ, Infinity Ward has confirmed Gunsmith support for up to five normal attachments plus one Apex Attachment — so a gun you haven't levelled in Multiplayer walks into Hajin with an empty build sheet.
A sensible order of operations:
- Push Player Rank first so the weapons you actually want are unlocked and customisable.
- Level the gun in Multiplayer to open its attachment pool and, eventually, its Apex.
- Take that fully built gun into DMZ for the DMZ leg of the camo track, where you're no longer fighting with a stock iron-sight loadout.
- Save Warzone for last, since Season 1 arrives shortly after launch and brings the MW4 content and seasonal progression into Warzone — and Activision hasn't published an exact Season 1 date.
Pro tip: DMZ Story Missions run inside live servers shared with other players. Treat every mission run as PvP with a side quest attached, not a PvE chore. Bring the gun you're best with, not the gun you're grinding, when the objective genuinely matters.
Common mistakes
- Assuming camo progress is universal. It isn't. The camo track spans three modes, but the Mastery Camos come three per mode for nine total. Finishing Multiplayer mastery gets you a third of the way, not all of it.
- Grinding low-level guns in DMZ. Stock weapons in an extraction mode with real stakes is how you lose your kit and your patience.
- Expecting bot lobbies to solve DMZ. Bot lobbies are a Multiplayer tool. Hajin is a shared PvPvE server — plan accordingly.
- Waiting for "official" XP charts before starting. They may never land. The confirmed shared-progression structure is enough to build a plan today.
- Ignoring the pre-launch calendar. Campaign Early Access starts October 16 for eligible digital pre-orders, which is campaign time, not grind time.
The honest time cost
Nine Mastery Camos per weapon across three modes is the largest camo commitment Modern Warfare has ever shipped, and the DMZ leg is the slowest of the three because deployments are long and fights are optional. Even with shared weapon progression doing you a favour, a full camo set on a handful of favourites is dozens of hours of deliberate, repetitive play.
If you'd rather spend that time playing Hajin for the loot and the firefights instead of chipping at challenge counters, our MW4 camo boostfrom $5.99 handles the camo track on the weapons you choose, and our weapon leveling servicefrom $4.99 takes care of the levels and Apex Attachment unlocks underneath it. You pick the guns; we'll do the counting.
