Does MW4 Have SBMM? Yes — But Is Open Moshpit Staying?

Yes, MW4 has SBMM. Quick Play in the beta ran Activision's newer skill-aware system, and a separate Open Moshpit playlist cut skill weighting way down. Here's what's confirmed, what isn't, and what to watch for on October 23.

Does MW4 Have SBMM? Yes — But Is Open Moshpit Staying?

Yes. Does MW4 have SBMM? It does. In the beta, the default Quick Play playlists used Activision's updated skill-aware matchmaking, and a separate Open Moshpit playlist gave players lobbies with very little skill weighting. Neither Infinity Ward nor Activision has said which setup ships at launch on October 23, 2026, so anything about the final version is still unconfirmed.

That's the short answer. Below you'll find what the beta showed, the numbers Activision published, and your options if you want easier lobbies. Those options are Open playlists (if they survive), private matches, and paid MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99 for players who only want to grind camos.

Does MW4 have SBMM? What the beta confirmed

Verdict: skill is a factor, and Activision now says so openly.

In its matchmaking posts before the beta, Activision said the new system is "not a return to the tighter matchmaking of recent games" and that connection is still the top priority. It also said every Call of Duty has looked at skill in some way, BO1 and BO2 included. Lobbies also depend on location, time of day, playlist, party makeup, platform, crossplay settings and how many people are online.

The beta ran two systems at the same time:

  • Quick Play (TDM, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed, Search & Destroy, Inflation, Hijack) used the new system. This is the same "Classic" system Black Ops 7 got in Season 5.
  • Open Moshpit (TDM, Domination, Hardpoint, Kill Confirmed only, with no Hardcore version) used Open Matchmaking, which puts very little weight on skill.

Activision's stated reason for running both was to "keep learning from both." It never published how much weight skill gets in either system. When people say Open is "no SBMM," they're guessing. Activision only calls it reduced.

Why Activision is leaning away from Open

Verdict: the company's own numbers favor tighter matchmaking, and it isn't hiding that.

On August 19, the official Call of Duty account shared Black Ops 7 data comparing Open with Standard matchmaking, covering launch through Season 4. For 80% of players, Open led to:

  • 32.7% higher quit rates
  • 14.4% fewer kills per minute
  • 5.3% lower win rates
  • 59.2% more "Not Fun" ratings

Quit rates on Nuketown 24/7 reportedly went up 141%. Activision also said that since Season 5, quit rates have dropped across every skill group, and fell 41% for more than half of players.

Remember that Activision is both the one grading this data and the one setting the policy. Players pushed back quickly. The BO7 Season 5 Classic system got heavy criticism on Reddit, where some players said it brought back the sweaty lobbies they'd been trying to get away from.

Our read: Activision's data explains why Quick Play stays skill-aware. It doesn't prove that Open Moshpit is going away.

What players reported during the beta

Many players found Early Access Quick Play sweaty and thought the SBMM felt restrictive. Infinity Ward's update for Weekend 2 promised aim assist changes but didn't mention matchmaking at all.

Open Moshpit also had a visible downgrade. It kept persistent lobbies, but it didn't get map voting when the other playlists did, so players couldn't see the next map before loading in. Some players took that as Activision nudging people toward Quick Play. Whatever the intent, missing features make any comparison of how popular each playlist was less reliable.

Before the beta, Infinity Ward also told creators that MW4 would not "revert directly back to pre-Black Ops 7" matchmaking. That's still the clearest official line on the full game.

What's confirmed vs. what isn't

Confirmed:

  • MW4 uses skill-based matchmaking in its default playlists.
  • Connection is officially the top-weighted factor.
  • The beta ran the new system and Open Matchmaking side by side.
  • Launch is October 23, 2026, with Campaign Early Access on October 16 for eligible digital preorders.

Not confirmed:

  • Whether Open Moshpit exists at launch, and which modes it would include.
  • How much skill actually counts in Quick Play.
  • Whether Open Moshpit gets map voting if it returns.
  • How MW4 Ranked Play will work.

We'll update this page once Activision posts the launch playlist list.

Related questions

Can you turn off SBMM in MW4? No. Core multiplayer has no SBMM toggle. The only in-game way to get looser lobbies is to pick an Open playlist if one exists. Private matches take matchmaking out entirely, but most challenge progress doesn't count there.

Does a VPN get around MW4 SBMM? There's no reliable evidence that it does. Connection is the most heavily weighted factor, so a VPN will most likely just make your ping worse. Activision's own list of factors also includes region, time of day and population, which a VPN doesn't simply override.

Does SBMM slow down the camo grind? Harder lobbies usually mean fewer kills per match, and that stretches out kill-based challenges. Our MW4 camo grind guide goes through how long each mastery tier takes. If you're wondering how bot lobbies avoid public matchmaking altogether, MW4 Bot Lobbies Explained covers it.

Is Open Moshpit easier than Quick Play? Usually, yes. Skill levels vary much more, so you get a mix of easy and hard lobbies instead of steady sweats. It isn't guaranteed to be easy, because Activision never said skill is completely ignored there.

The bottom line

MW4 has SBMM, and Activision's data shows it isn't going to remove it. The open question for October 23 is whether Open Moshpit stays as a lower-skill option. If it launches, it's the free way to get looser lobbies. If you mainly care about weapon XP and camo challenges and don't want to fight sweaty Quick Play lobbies for them, MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99 are one more option.
