How to Play Against Bots in MW4: Every Option, Ranked

MW4 has AI enemies in the campaign and DMZ and dummies in the Firing Range, but public multiplayer is real players only. Here's every way to face bots, and which ones actually count for progression.

How to Play Against Bots in MW4: Every Option, Ranked

MW4 has bots, but not where most players want them. You fight AI enemies in the campaign and in DMZ, and the Multiplayer Firing Range has practice dummies, but public multiplayer matchmaking is real players only, with no option to add bots. If you want to play against bots and have it count for weapon levels and camos, that's what hosted bot lobbies are for.

Below is every place you can face bots in Modern Warfare 4, what we could and couldn't confirm from official sources, and how bot lobbies differ.

Where you can play against bots in MW4

Verdict: AI opponents exist in three places; none of them is public multiplayer.

WhereBots or AI?Good for progression?Status
CampaignAI enemies (single-player story)Not a multiplayer weapon grindConfirmed
DMZHostile AI forces in the zone, alongside up to 20 player squadsYes, it's a real progression modeConfirmed
Firing RangePractice dummies with stats trackingBuilt for testing builds, not levelingConfirmed
Proving GroundsMovement tutorials and timed coursesPractice onlyConfirmed
Private Match vs botsSeries stapleHistorically little or no XPNot detailed in MW4's official launch posts
Public multiplayerReal players onlyYesConfirmed: no bot option

A few notes on that table:

  • Campaign. MW4 ships with a single-player campaign, so you're shooting AI from the first mission. Great for learning guns, but it isn't where multiplayer weapon levels or camos come from.
  • DMZ. The extraction mode drops up to 20 squads of up to three players into a large map with hostile forces moving through it. Activision's own patch notes reference "AI reinforcements" in DMZ missions. DMZ has its own Gunsmith and Firing Range at the FOB, and it counts for weapon progression. But you're still sharing the map with real squads.
  • Firing Range. There are two: one in Multiplayer and one in the DMZ FOB. Activision describes them as places to compare builds and test attachments, with practice dummies and stats like time-to-kill. It's useful, but it's a test range, not a match.
  • Proving Grounds. This is a launch mode with movement tutorials and timed courses you can S-rank. It teaches the movement system. It isn't a bot match.

Does MW4 multiplayer have bots?

Verdict: No. Public matches are against real people, and there's no setting to change that.

Every Team Deathmatch, Domination or Hardpoint lobby you queue into is filled through matchmaking with real players. Activision has never shipped an "easy lobby" or "add bots" toggle for public multiplayer, and MW4 doesn't have one either. Matchmaking also weighs skill, which is why your lobbies get harder the better you play. Our does MW4 have SBMM? guide covers that side.

You may see videos claiming a menu trick or "glitch" that fills a public lobby with bots. We looked into that in the bot lobby glitch question. Short version: don't count on it.

Private Match with bots: what we can and can't confirm

Verdict: likely there, but check in-game. Don't expect it to level your guns.

Private Match with AI bots has been part of Call of Duty for years, and players expect it in MW4. But Activision's official MW4 launch posts we checked, covering the launch maps and modes, the Create-a-Class and weapons post, and the launch patch notes, don't list Private Match bot options. So we can't tell you exactly how many bots you can add or which difficulty settings exist. Open the Private Match menu in-game and check the bot settings there.

The bigger issue is progression. In past Call of Duty games, private matches paid little or no XP, and Activision hasn't published MW4's private match XP rules. Treat Private Match as practice: learning a map, testing a loadout against moving targets, or warming up. Don't treat it as a way to level weapons or finish camo challenges.

Why "playing against bots" usually isn't the real goal

Most people searching "does MW4 have bots" aren't after practice. They want an easier way to grind:

  • weapon levels toward attachments and the Apex Attachment at max level,
  • camo challenges like headshots, longshots and multi-kills,
  • player XP and daily or event challenges.

None of the official bot options does that well. The campaign, Firing Range and Proving Grounds don't feed multiplayer weapon progression the way public matches do, and Private Match historically pays little. DMZ counts, but it's a slower, mixed PvE/PvP mode. That gap is why bot lobbies exist.

What MW4 bot lobbies are (and how they're different)

Verdict: a bot lobby is a normal multiplayer match where the enemy team is bots, so it counts like any other match.

Here's how MW4 Bot Lobbiesfrom $3.99 work with us:

  1. Order and send your Activision ID in the order chat. No password, ever.
  2. We reply with the host's Activision ID. Add it and join the party.
  3. Load in and play on your own account and device. Time starts when you first load into the lobby, and a live countdown runs in the order chat.
  4. Farm what you need. One lobby is one full match, about 10 minutes, with 5 bots on the enemy team.

It works with cross-play on PS5, Xbox, PC and Switch 2. Cross-play needs to be on in your MW4 settings. Console players can follow our PS5 and Xbox join guide.

One thing to know about standard lobbies: another customer may be on the enemy team farming the bots on your side. Leave them alone, which means no shooting them and no lethal or area killstreaks. If bots go offline, you see "Connection Lost," or an unexpected player joins, leave the game and tell us in the order chat. We'll fix it and get you back in.

Are bot lobbies safe?

Verdict: low risk the way we run them, but nobody can honestly promise 100%.

Bot lobbies aren't an official Activision feature. Our setup keeps the risky parts out: it's self-play on your own account, there's no password or account sharing, and nothing is installed on your device. We've completed 300+ orders with no account issues so far, and the product page carries a beta notice because no one can guarantee zero risk. More in are MW4 bot lobbies legit?

Quick answers

Does MW4 have bots? Yes, in the campaign, as AI forces in DMZ, and as practice dummies in the Firing Range. Public multiplayer matchmaking has no bots.

Can you add bots to a Private Match in MW4? Bots in Private Match are a long-running Call of Duty feature, but Activision's MW4 launch posts don't detail the options. Check the Private Match menu in-game for bot settings.

Do MW4 private matches with bots give XP? Activision hasn't published MW4's rules. In past games private matches paid little or no XP, so don't plan a camo grind around them.

Are there bots in MW4 DMZ? Yes. DMZ has hostile AI forces on the map alongside real player squads.

What's the difference between MW4 bots and a bot lobby? A bot lobby is a hosted multiplayer match with 5 bots on the enemy team, played on your own account. Kills and wins count like any normal match.

How much does an MW4 bot lobby cost? One lobby (one full match, about 10 minutes) is $4.99, with cheaper per-lobby prices in packs. See how much MW4 bot lobbies cost.
