How to Prestige in MW4 and When to Prestige: Classic or Regular?
How to prestige in MW4: reach Level 55, then pick Classic (full reset, prestige token, extra XP) or Regular (keep your unlocks). Here's when each one makes sense, and what Activision still hasn't confirmed before the October 23 launch.

To prestige in MW4, reach Level 55 and pick one of two paths. Classic Prestige re-locks your gear in exchange for a prestige token, a higher XP rate and exclusive rewards. Regular Prestige sends you back to Level 1 and keeps your Create-a-Class unlocks. As for when to prestige: if you want Prestige Mastery, go Classic as soon as you hit 55. Otherwise, wait until you've finished any grind that needs late-unlock gear. That covers both halves of the question, so here's the detail.
Everyone starts at Level 1 on October 23. Black Ops 7 rank and prestige don't carry over, so the climb to 55 is the first wall for every player. You can grind it yourself in normal matches, or have a booster play it for you with our MW4 Soldier Rank boostfrom $4.10. Either way, make the prestige decision before you hit 55, not after.
Quick-start checklist
- Hit Level 55. Official Call of Duty messaging names Level 55 as the point where Classic Prestige opens up.
- Fill the XP bar (probably). In Black Ops 7 you had to max out the XP bar at 55 before the option appeared. Expect the same in MW4, but it isn't confirmed.
- Choose your path: Classic or Regular.
- Classic only: spend your prestige token on a late-unlock item you use in every class.
- Climb again. You restart at Level 1 on either path.
How to prestige in MW4: the two paths compared
Verdict: Classic is for completionists. Regular is for people who like their loadouts.
Activision describes Classic as the traditional reset. It wipes level unlocks and Create-a-Class progression, and in return you get a higher XP rate, exclusive rewards and a path toward Prestige Mastery. Regular keeps every level unlock and Create-a-Class item, but you only get a subset of the prestige rewards and milestones.
| Classic Prestige | Regular Prestige | Stay at 55 | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Back to Level 1 | Yes | Yes | No |
| Gear and Create-a-Class re-locked | Yes | No | No |
| Prestige token | Yes (confirmed) | Not confirmed | No |
| Higher XP rate | Yes (exact % not published) | Not confirmed | No |
| Rewards | Full set plus exclusives | A subset | None |
| Leads to Prestige Mastery | Yes | Not confirmed | No |
One thing is missing from the official material: whether Classic also resets weapon levels and camos. In Black Ops 7, prestiging kept weapon progression, attachments and camos. MW4's Classic path is described as working like BO7's, but Activision hasn't confirmed weapon progression specifically. Don't assume it's safe until the launch client shows it.
The official line is that "greater rewards await those who choose the harder path." That's true, but the full reward list hasn't been published yet.
When to prestige in MW4
Verdict: prestige early on Classic, late on Regular.
Prestige straight away at 55 if:
- You want Prestige Mastery. Only the Classic path is officially tied to it.
- You want the XP boost. Every match you play at 55 without prestiging is XP you didn't earn at the higher rate. In BO6 and BO7 the Classic boost was reportedly around 20%. MW4's figure hasn't been published.
- You care about prestige-linked camos. A Prestige Mastery camo showcase was shown at Call of Duty: NEXT, but the unlock requirements haven't been released.
Hold off at 55 if:
- You're halfway through a camo grind on a gun that unlocks late. A Classic reset re-locks it until you earn it again or spend your token on it.
- A Double XP weekend is a day or two away. Prestiging just before it starts means your boosted XP goes into the new climb.
- You'd rather have Regular's rewards. Regular costs you nothing in loadout terms, so the timing barely matters. Prestige whenever you like.
Token tip: if MW4 handles tokens like BO7 did, you can't refund or move them once spent. Use yours on something that unlocks around Level 45 or later and goes in every class, such as a perk or wildcard. A Level 12 SMG is a waste of a token.
What isn't confirmed yet
We'll say it plainly: as of October 9, 2026, Activision hasn't published:
- The total number of Classic prestige levels (BO7 had 10, then Prestige Master up to Level 1000)
- Whether MW4 has seasonal prestige caps
- The exact Classic XP bonus
- The full reward track, or what Prestige Mastery requires
- Whether you can switch paths on each prestige. Some third-party guides say yes, but there's no official statement.
The launch build will answer most of these. Until then, any guide giving exact numbers is guessing.

Does my Black Ops 7 prestige carry over to MW4? No. MW4 has its own progression, so every player starts at Level 1 at launch, however many times they prestiged in BO7 or BO6. If you're getting ready for day one, our MW4 launch day checklist covers what to sort out first.
Can you prestige in the MW4 beta? No. The beta had a level cap well below 55, so the full prestige loop starts on October 23.
Is Regular Prestige pointless? No. It's for players who'd stay at 55 anyway. You keep every unlock and still get some rewards and milestones. You just miss out on the exclusive Classic rewards.
What's the fastest way to reach 55 again after a Classic reset? Play objective modes, keep a few Double XP tokens for each new climb, and do your challenges, since challenge XP adds up fast. Some players also use MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99 for steady weapon and account XP. It's one option among several, not a requirement.
One climb from 1 to 55 is a real time investment, and Classic Prestige asks you to do it over and over. If you'd rather spend those hours on the parts of MW4 you actually enjoy, our MW4 Account Leveling & Rank Boostfrom $4.10 covers the climb through normal gameplay by a verified booster.
