Why Are My First MW4 Matches So Easy?

Your first MW4 matches feel easy because skill-based matchmaking hasn't worked out your level yet. Here's why it happens, when lobbies get harder, and how many hours the grind takes once they do.

Why Are My First MW4 Matches So Easy?

Your first MW4 matches are so easy mainly because the matchmaker doesn't know how good you are yet. Modern Warfare 4 uses skill-based matchmaking in every launch playlist, and it needs a run of games (your kills, deaths and wins) before it can place you accurately. Until then, your lobbies are a looser and usually softer mix. Activision has never published how it sets the starting rating for a brand-new MW4 profile. So players report this "honeymoon" all the time, but Activision has never officially explained it.

It also doesn't last. Once your rating catches up, those 25-kill games turn into close, sweaty ones. If you'd rather skip fighting calibrated lobbies for every camo, MW4 Bot Lobbiesfrom $3.99 are one shortcut: a normal match against five enemy bots, played on your own account. Below, we cover the free side first.

Why are my first MW4 matches so easy? The four real reasons

Verdict: your rating isn't settled yet, and the launch-week crowd makes it worse.

  1. Your skill rating is still a guess. Activision says skill is built from overall performance: kills, deaths, wins, losses, mode selection and recent matches. Its matchmaking white paper also says skill values change gradually so the system doesn't overcorrect. That means it takes several matches to reach your true level. Where a fresh MW4 rating starts has not been made public.
  2. Everyone is on base kit. MW4 launched on October 23, 2026. Every Soldier Rank, weapon level and Apex Attachment started at zero, so nobody has a fully built meta gun yet.
  3. The launch-week player pool is broad. This is our read, not Activision data: the first weeks pull in lapsed and casual players who don't play all year, and that widens the pool you can be matched with.
  4. Search backoff. Activision's white paper explains that the longer a search runs, the more the matchmaker loosens its limits. It also loosens skill faster than ping. Late-night queues or quiet regions can widen the skill range.

What it is not

  • Not a hidden bot playlist. Public MW4 Multiplayer is real players only. No toggle adds bots.
  • Not Open Matchmaking. CharlieIntel's October 22 check of the launch menu found every playlist on the "Standard" system. There's no Open or Classic option like the ones in Black Ops 7.
  • Not always good news. On PC, failing the TPM 2.0 / Secure Boot attestation check sends you to a separate matchmaking pool. Flagged accounts can also land in shadow pools, which players sometimes mistake for "bot lobbies".
The honeymoon is real, but it's a side effect of calibration. It isn't a feature, and nobody can switch it back on for you.

When do MW4 lobbies start getting harder?

Verdict: after a few games, and the trigger is how well you play, not how long you play.

Players report that once MW4 has a few matches of data on you, games start to feel alike: competitive, with the odd blowout either way. Activision has said it does not look at how often or how much you play. Grinding hours doesn't tighten your lobbies. Dropping 30 kills does.

Lobbies also break up after every match. Activision's own figure is that about half of players leave after the first game, and almost none of the original lobby is left by game three. So each new match is a fresh search using your updated rating. That's why the honeymoon can end in one evening.

How long does it take: honeymoon vs. calibrated grind

Verdict: the easy phase lasts about an hour or two, and the long grind starts after that.

The camo track shows the cost best. Gold asks for 15 eliminations in one match. The first Multiplayer mastery camo, Mercurial Drift, asks for 10 kills in a match, 250 times. Our assumptions:

  • A public Team Deathmatch takes about 12 minutes including queue and intermission. A bot lobby match is about 10 minutes.
  • A typical player in calibrated lobbies gets 10+ kills in about 1 of every 3 matches, and 15+ in about 1 of every 4.
  • In honeymoon or bot lobbies, assume 10+ kills in nearly every match.
  • Our estimate for the honeymoon is 5–10 matches (roughly 1–2 hours), based on player reports. Activision hasn't confirmed any number.
ScenarioGoalMatchesApprox. hours
Honeymoon lobbiesGold (15 elims, once)1–20.2–0.4
Calibrated publicGold (15 elims, once)~4~0.8
Calibrated publicMercurial Drift (250 × 10-kill games)~750~150
Bot lobbyMercurial Drift (250 × 10-kill games)~250~42

Those are estimates, not promises. A strong player will beat the public numbers, and a slower one won't. The gap is the point, though: the honeymoon covers a Gold or two, not a mastery chain. For the long challenges, the free options are limited. Popular Modes playlists may run looser according to community testing, and off-peak play can widen your searches. The paid option is bot lobbies for the kill-count camosfrom $3.99, where every match counts as a 10-kill game. How to use your easy early matches well

Verdict: spend the honeymoon on the hard single-match challenges.

  • Chase Gold-style challenges first. "15 eliminations in one match" gets much harder later. "Get X kills total" doesn't care.
  • Stack weapon XP. The campaign gives two Double Weapon XP Tokens, from missions 11 and 13. Use them while the kills come easily.
  • Don't try to stretch it by throwing games. Reverse boosting can land you in Limited Matchmaking or get you a ban. Our guide on whether reverse boosting gets you banned in MW4 explains the risk.

Related questions

Does my Black Ops 7 skill rating carry over to MW4? It's not confirmed. Activision hasn't said whether MW4 starts your rating fresh or uses data from older games. Ignore anyone who claims to know for sure.

Will a fresh account give me easy lobbies again? Maybe for a few matches, but it's a bad trade. Activision's security policy says hiding or disguising your identity or hardware can lead to a permanent suspension. PC accounts also have to pass RICOCHET's attestation checks.

Are Popular Modes easier than Quick Play? Community testing suggests Popular Modes playlists such as TDM and Domination keep lobbies together between matches and mix skill levels more. Activision hasn't said how their matchmaking differs, so treat this as unconfirmed.

Is Open Matchmaking coming back? Unknown. It was tested in the beta, and Activision hasn't said whether it will return or is gone for good. Treat any "Open returns in Season 1" post as a rumor until it appears on callofduty.com.

Once your rating settles, a mastery chain like Mercurial Drift can mean 100+ hours of public matches for a typical player. If you'd rather spend that time on games you actually enjoy, our MW4 Bot Lobbiesfrom $3.99 are one way to turn the kill-count challenges into a few evenings of steady progress.
