What's the Fastest Way to Get Headshots in MW4?

The fastest way to get headshots in MW4 is to play small-map Kill Confirmed or TDM with a low-recoil gun that has a strong head multiplier, and keep your crosshair at head height. Here's what's confirmed before the October 23 launch and what still isn't.

What's the Fastest Way to Get Headshots in MW4?

The fastest way to get headshots in MW4 is to queue small 6v6 maps in Team Deathmatch or Kill Confirmed with your own class, run a low-recoil gun that has a strong head multiplier, and keep your crosshair at head height. Do that and you'll stack headshots far faster than anywhere else at launch. One caveat matters a lot: as of October 9, 2026, Activision still hasn't published the actual camo challenge counts, so nobody knows yet how many headshots each tier needs.

So the method is clear but the target number isn't. If you'd rather skip the sweaty public lobbies altogether, private MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99 are one option. Most players will grind it in matchmaking, though, and everything below is written for that.

What's actually confirmed about MW4 headshot challenges?

Verdict: the structure is confirmed. The numbers aren't.

Call of Duty: NEXT on August 21 confirmed a shared per-weapon Camo Track across Multiplayer, Warzone and DMZ, with three mastery camos per mode. The beta's Camo Track was display only and showed no challenge counts. Several trackers have flagged viral graphics claiming 1,500-headshot requirements as unverified. Ignore any exact headshot number you see before launch-day patch notes.

What we can say: every recent Modern Warfare game has used headshots in its base camo challenges. MW2 (2022) had event challenges asking for up to 125 headshots per assault rifle. Plan for headshots being a big part of the MW4 grind, but don't plan around a specific figure. Our MW4 camo challenges per weapon tracker will update when the list drops.

Verdict: engagement density beats everything else. More fights per minute means more chances at a headshot.

  1. Pick a small Core map. Six Core maps were playable in the beta: Rooftops, Silkworm, Transit 213, Cachette, Lotus and Lithium. Transit 213, a compact train yard, is the closest thing to a launch-day meat grinder.
  2. Play Kill Confirmed or Team Deathmatch. The beta's Open Moshpit playlist mixed TDM, Domination, Hardpoint and Kill Confirmed. Objective modes split your attention. Slayer modes don't.
  3. Run your own class. This sounds obvious until you get to Kill Block (more on that below).
  4. Choose a gun that rewards head hits. The beta patches cut a lot of head multipliers: the M4 went from 1.5x to 1.2x, and the HAN 86 from 1.4x to 1.25x. A few went the other way. The Patriot XMR went up to 1.30x, the ISO Nightshade to 1.30x and the X-58 Nyx to 1.25x. Beta values can change at launch, so check the day-one notes.
  5. Build for recoil, not range. A clean optic and recoil-control attachments keep your follow-up shots at head level. Our MW4 launch meta tier list covers which builds held up after the nerfs.
  6. Aim at the head from the start. Pre-aim doorways and head-glitch spots at head height. Fixing your crosshair placement does more than any attachment.
Pro tip: In recent CoD games, a kill counts as a headshot when the final bullet hits the head. You don't need every shot up there, just the last one. Start at the upper chest and let recoil drift you up.

Pros and cons of the small-map slayer method

Pros

  • Available on day one with no unconfirmed playlists
  • Constant fights on compact layouts
  • Progress feeds the shared Camo Track and weapon XP at the same time

Cons

  • Public lobbies are sweaty, especially in launch week
  • Higher TTK after the beta nerfs means more drawn-out fights
  • Your rate depends heavily on your own aim (unfortunately)

How do the other options compare?

Verdict: some popular ideas are slower than they look, or not confirmed yet.

Kill Block deserves a warning. It's chaotic and full of targets, but in the beta every player got a new randomized shared loadout every two rounds. That makes it a poor place to grind headshots on one specific gun. Activision says more Core modes are coming to Kill Block after launch, so this could change.

Shipment is the obvious favourite for headshot grinding, and Activision confirmed on September 29 that it's coming back. Reports differ on timing. It wasn't on the announced launch map list, and in MW2 and MW3 Shipment arrived around Season 1. Treat a Shipment 24/7 playlist as likely, not guaranteed.

Pro tip: Sniper headshots are tougher than usual this year. The open beta gave every sniper 28% more flinch, so getting shot will throw your scope off target. Grind sniper headshots from cover, not from the open.

Related questions

Does MW4 camo progress carry over from MW3 or BO7? No. MW4's camo grind starts from zero, and Warzone gets a full progression reset when MW4 Season 1 arrives.

Do headshots in Warzone or DMZ count for MW4 camos? The base Camo Track is shared across all three modes, so progress you make in any of them should count. The mastery tiers are still mode-specific.

When will the exact headshot requirements be published? Activision hasn't said. Most trackers expect them at launch on October 23, 2026, or shortly after.

Is Hardcore better for headshots? In past games, low-health modes made headshots easier. We haven't seen confirmation that Hardcore will be in MW4 at launch, so don't build your plan around it yet.

The bottom line

On launch day, the fastest manual route is small maps, slayer modes and a high-multiplier gun with your crosshair at head height. Even so, headshot challenges across a full arsenal will take a long time in public lobbies, more so with the slower post-beta TTK. If you'd rather not spend those hours fighting sweats, our MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99 are one way to farm them against bots in matches that never end.
