MW4 Switch 2 Performance and Crossplay: Does It Hold 60 FPS?

MW4 on Switch 2 aims for 60 FPS in multiplayer and has full crossplay with PS5, Xbox and PC. In the beta, docked play mostly held that target but looked blurry, and some testers saw handheld drop to about 45 FPS. Here's what's confirmed and what isn't.

MW4 Switch 2 Performance and Crossplay: Does It Hold 60 FPS?

Mostly yes: Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2 aims for 60 FPS in multiplayer and has full crossplay with PS5, Xbox and PC, but in the beta only docked play came close to that target, and it gave up a lot of image quality to get there. That's the short answer on MW4 Switch 2 performance and crossplay. The details matter, because handheld results varied and the crossplay settings aren't fully confirmed yet.

Cross-progression is confirmed too. Your rank, weapon levels and unlocks live on your Activision account, not on the console. Progress earned on PC or PS5 should show up on Switch 2, and so should anything done through a service like our MW4 account levelingfrom $4.10. The game launches October 23, 2026, and digital pre-orders get Campaign Early Access from October 16.

MW4 Switch 2 performance and crossplay: the numbers

Verdict: docked is playable, and handheld is the open question.

These figures come from the open beta (August 28 – September 1), not the final launch build.

Multiplayer target60 FPS60 FPS
Beta resultClose to 60, with dips in heavy scenesReports disagree: one hands-on rarely saw above 45 FPS; early creator footage looked close to 60
Campaign (beta mission)30 FPS30 FPS

Biggest cutsDraw distance, textures, distant animationsSame, plus frame rate

The Switch 2 version is native, not streamed from the cloud. Infinity Ward built it with Digital Legends. Before launch the developers sounded relaxed about it. Jack O'Hara, co-studio head of Infinity Ward, summed up the port as "Things just work." The beta was less tidy than that.

Docked: smooth, but blurry

In docked mode, multiplayer mostly holds 60 FPS. Drops show up during heavy effects, which also happens on PS5. The price is visual: lower texture quality, shorter draw distance, visible pop-in, simpler enemy models and choppy animations at range. One reviewer called the result a blurry mess on a TV. Other early footage also showed blur inside magnified scopes. For a shooter, a soft image at long range is a real problem, not just a cosmetic one.

Handheld: sources disagree

Here the reports split. Early creator footage suggested handheld stayed close to 60 FPS and looked sharper than docked. Kotaku's beta hands-on found the opposite on frame rate: it rarely went above 45 FPS and dropped further during explosions and close fights. The developers reportedly said handheld still needs optimisation. Launch performance is not confirmed. Expect patches, and don't count on 60 FPS handheld on day one.

Crossplay: who Switch 2 players actually face

Verdict: crossplay is confirmed on every platform, and that cuts both ways.

"Right now, we support crossplay between Switch 2 and the rest of the platforms." — Infinity Ward, speaking to GamesRadar+

Note the words "right now." Infinity Ward has said the final matchmaking mix will be decided at launch, so the setup could still change. What's known so far:

  • You share lobbies with PC, PS5 and Xbox players. There's no Switch-only pool by default.
  • Switch 2 players have their own icon in the lobby. Kotaku rarely saw it during the beta, so Switch players were a small part of matches.
  • The hardware gap is real. A 60 FPS Switch 2 with shorter draw distance can end up against PC players on 240 Hz monitors. A player you can't see clearly at range will often win that fight.
  • Turning crossplay off: not confirmed. Recent Call of Duty games let console players disable it, but Activision hasn't shown MW4's exact setting. Check the settings menu at launch rather than assuming it's there.

Controls: Joy-Con 2 mouse mode, gyro and Pro Controller

Verdict: more input options than any other console version, with one gap.

The Switch 2 version supports Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, gyro aiming, the Switch 2 Pro Controller, HDR and handheld play. Mouse mode is optional, and standard controller play works fine. The gap: external USB mouse and keyboard is not supported, according to the official Call of Duty account. If you want mouse aim, you have to use the Joy-Con 2. Some reviewers say it's fine for casual play, but they wouldn't use it in place of a proper mouse.

Storage: plan for about 85–87 GB

Nintendo's eShop listed the standard edition at about 84.9 GB before launch. A developer later said the launch build would land around 87 GB. The beta needed 38.7 GB. Updates will add to this over the season, so leave some free space.

Quick answers

Does MW4 run at 60 FPS on Switch 2? In docked multiplayer, mostly yes. Handheld results disagreed during the beta, and the campaign runs at 30 FPS.

Is MW4 on Switch 2 cloud streaming? No. It's a native build.

Can Switch 2 players play with PS5, Xbox and PC friends? Yes. Crossplay and cross-progression are both confirmed.

Related questions

Can you turn off crossplay on Switch 2? Not confirmed yet. Earlier Call of Duty games had a console toggle, and MW4 probably will too, but nobody has shown the Switch 2 setting. Check the menu on October 23.

Is Warzone on the Switch 2 version? Warzone Resurgence on the new Zodiac map was playable in the Switch 2 beta. DMZ comes with the full game at launch.

Does Switch 2 progress carry over to other platforms? Yes. Cross-progression runs through your Activision account, so levels and unlocks follow you across platforms.

Is Switch 2 the worst way to play competitively? Based on the beta, yes. Lower visual detail and the frame-rate gap against high-refresh PCs are real disadvantages in crossplay lobbies. It's still the only native handheld option for MW4.

At 60 FPS, with shorter draw distance and against PC players, leveling weapons and grinding camos on Switch 2 will be slow. If you'd rather not grind those challenges in crowded crossplay lobbies, there are other options: queue in off-peak hours, party up with friends, or use a private match setup like our MW4 bot lobbiesfrom $4.99.
