What's New in MW4 DMZ Compared to the Original Beta?

What's new in MW4 DMZ: a new Hajin map built for the mode, a separate 1–70 progression track, the FOB hub, 3D Printer crafting, Operator trait trees and permanent gear loss. Here's what's confirmed and what isn't yet.

What's New in MW4 DMZ Compared to the Original Beta?

Here's the short answer to MW4 DMZ what's new: almost all of it. DMZ is back as a full mode in Modern Warfare 4, not a beta. It has a new map called Hajin that was built for DMZ, its own 1–70 progression track, a Forward Operating Base (FOB) you can walk around, 3D Printer crafting, persistent Operators with trait trees, and permanent loss of any gear you don't extract. It launches with MW4 on October 23, 2026. Players who pre-order digitally get DMZ Early Access from October 20.

That's a big step up from the 2022 DMZ Beta, which ran free-to-play inside Warzone. The mode also has its own mastery camo track: Chiral, Ripple Tide and Helio. Most players will earn those by playing, but if you'd rather not grind them, our Chiral camo unlockfrom $103.00 is one option. Everything below comes from Infinity Ward's two-part DMZ deep dive on the Call of Duty Blog and the coverage around it.

MW4 DMZ: What's New at a Glance

Verdict: the systems underneath have been rebuilt, not just tweaked.

Dying still hurts, and it hurts more now. Gear you don't extract is gone for good, and losing an Operator costs you money: you pay DMZ Cash to rescue Operators who go MIA.

Hajin: The New Map

Verdict: this is Infinity Ward's biggest map yet, and some areas are tough by design.

Hajin is a South Korean exclusion zone left behind after a nuclear reactor meltdown, and the mode's story picks up after the MW4 campaign. Main points of interest include a prison, an air base, a hospital, a mall, a stadium, a wharf and the Haneul Nuclear Reactor. Radiation from the reactor spreads as the match timer runs down.

Every POI has a Threat Level, shown below your compass, from Low up to Extreme. Mirae General Hospital is listed as Low. The Grid in central Hajin City is Critical, and the Nenshin Tech Complex is Extreme. Playing loud raises the threat and brings in stronger enemy reinforcements. Bosses are back too: Lieutenants and Commanders, plus Lieutenant Hunts you start from special towers. The weather also changes during matches.

Pro tip: The Threat indicator counts AI only. Human squads don't show up in it, so a POI marked Low can still have a squad waiting for you.

One caveat: you don't get the whole map on day one. Infinity Ward has said a Russian section will arrive in a later season, but it hasn't given a season number or a date.

Progression and the FOB

Verdict: this is the biggest change. Every deployment now feeds a long-term system.

DMZ has its own Level 1–70 track, separate from MW4's regular Level 1–55 progression. You still earn normal player and weapon XP while you play DMZ. Each Operator also has a Dog Tag rank, from Steel up to Onyx III across 18 levels. Each rank gives a Trait Point to spend in one of three trees: Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist. You start with two Active Duty Operator slots, or three with the Vault Edition. Operator Prestige is in as well.

The unlock levels come from community guides based on the official FOB deep dive, so check them in-game at launch. The 3D Printer also upgrades your other stations. Recipes come from leveling up or from loot found during deployments, which you then need to extract.

Pro tip: Looting is one of the most reliable sources of DMZ XP. Killing enemy Operators and extracting with their Dog Tags pays out a lot of XP and DMZ Cash. Grab everything you can carry.

Solo vs Squad

Verdict: solo is supported on purpose, not just allowed.

Squads have three players, and you can recruit one enemy player into your squad for a maximum of four. Solo players get a Stealth Meter that shows how visible they are. Infinity Ward says Story Missions are built for both squads and solo play. You spawn with 150 health, and it regenerates slowly. There is no PvE-only mode planned at the moment, so expect other players in every deployment.

What's Not Confirmed Yet

  • Post-launch maps: Infinity Ward's From The Ward series teased a Building 21-style location for Season 1 (reported as XL1) and a Hajin expansion for Season 2. There are no dates yet.
  • Early Access eligibility: The official blog says digital pre-orders of the Standard or Vault Edition. Some outlets have written "any edition." Go by the official wording. If you're getting ready for October 20, our MW4 launch day checklist covers the basics.
  • Balance: Some critics have pointed out that three days of Early Access could give pre-order players a head start in progression. How much that matters won't be clear until people are playing.
