BF6 Season 5 XP Cap Bug: 6 Fixes That Actually Work (2026)
Still earning low XP in Battlefield 6 Season 5? Here's what caused the reported 300 XP-per-minute cap, what DICE has confirmed fixed, how to test your own account in one match, and what to do if your XP still looks capped.

The Battlefield 6 Season 5 XP cap bug came from a backend configuration change that shipped with the October 13 Siege of Vegas launch. It throttled XP earn rates across core modes and weapon mastery, and Battlefield Studios says it was reverted on October 15. If your progression still feels slow, the fix is usually a full client restart and a quick test match, not a reinstall. If you've already lost two days of grinding and don't want to lose more, our Battlefield 6 weapon leveling servicefrom $19.99 can take any gun to Mastery 50 while you play something else.
Below is a checklist ordered from most to least likely to help, then the detail on each fix, then what to do if none of them work.
What Actually Happened to XP in Season 5
Within hours of Season 5 going live, players saw that their end-of-match scores no longer matched the XP they were given. Community testing on the Steam forums pointed to a hard limit of 300 weapon XP per minute. One widely shared example: a 6-minute match with 26 kills paid out exactly 2,160 XP, which works out to 6 minutes × 300 XP × the 1.2 BF Pro bonus. At that rate, one kill and one assist used up the whole minute's allowance.
Not every report described the cap the same way. Some outlets wrote about a 300 XP-per-minute limit, while at least one described a 300,000 XP ceiling on weapons. The per-minute version has the best evidence behind it, because it's the one that matches the in-game numbers players posted. Reports also said vehicles, classes, career rank and the Battle Pass were hit, but the full scope was never officially confirmed.
About two days in, Battlefield Comms called the problem unintended, said the backend changes had been reverted, and said the team would keep watching telemetry. DICE's known-issues list now says earn rates are back to normal. A lot of players don't believe the accidental explanation, because the slowdown arrived on the same day as the paid Ultimate Shortcut Kit. We've covered whether that bundle is worth buying in Is the Battlefield 6 Ultimate Shortcut Kit Worth It?.
The cap was server-side, so the official fix was server-side too. You don't need to patch your way out of it. You need to confirm your session is picking up the corrected settings.
Quick-Fix Checklist (Most Likely First)
- Fully restart the game and launcher so you start a fresh session (community advice, low effort)
- Install the latest client update. DICE pushed three patches in Season 5's first week, the last being 1.000.036 (confirmed patches)
- Run the one-match XP test below to see if you're still capped (diagnostic)
- Check the playlist or Portal experience you're in. Some modes earn XP differently (community)
- Rule out the separate XP-tracking bug (community)
- Report it with numbers if the test still shows a cap (official channel)
Fix 1: Full Restart, Not Just Back to Menu
It makes sense to suspect a cached session if you were logged in across the October 15 revert. A full exit is enough to test that: close Battlefield 6, quit the EA app or Steam completely (from the tray, not just minimised), then relaunch. Console players should close the game from the system menu, not suspend it. This is a community workaround, not a step DICE has prescribed, but it costs two minutes and rules out the most common cause.
Fix 2: Get on the Current Build
DICE released hotfix 1.000.035 on October 15 to fix audio cutting out, then 1.000.036 shortly after. DICE hasn't said the XP revert depended on either client patch. Still, being on an old build can cause matchmaking and progression sync problems, so update before you start testing.
Fix 3: The One-Match XP Test
This takes the guesswork out. Play one full match of Conquest or Breakthrough, note how many minutes you played, then look at your weapon XP gain on the end-of-round screen.
- Still capped: your weapon XP lands exactly on minutes × 300 × any multiplier (for example, 10 minutes with BF Pro = 3,600 XP, no matter how many kills you got).
- Fixed: your weapon XP goes up with your kills and stops landing on a neat multiple of 300.
Some players also say double XP has been running since the rollback. We haven't seen an official event announcement confirming it, so take any extra multiplier into account when you do the maths.
Fix 4: Check Your Mode
Some of the first cap reports came from Battlefield Portal, and players only later confirmed the cap in standard multiplayer too. Portal experiences have their own XP rules that existed before this bug. A low payout there may be normal behaviour, not the cap. Our guide on farming XP in Battlefield 6 Portal explains which experiences pay out. Test in a core playlist first.
Fix 5: Rule Out the Tracking Bug
A cap means you earn XP but at a throttled rate. A tracking bug means XP gets earned but never lands on the weapon. If your end-of-match screen shows healthy numbers and the weapon level doesn't move, that's a different problem with different fixes.
Fix 6: Report It With Evidence
If the test shows a clean 300-per-minute pattern after October 15, post it on the official EA Battlefield 6 forums under Technical Issues. Include your platform, playlist, match length and a screenshot of the XP breakdown. DICE has said its known-issues list isn't complete, so a specific, number-backed report is worth more than a general complaint.
Pros and Cons of Fixing It Yourself and Grinding On
Pros:
- It costs nothing and most players will be back to normal earn rates after one restart
- Any double XP still running makes the next few days unusually efficient
- The new Season 5 weapons need levelling anyway, so the grind does double duty
Cons:
- XP lost during the capped window hasn't been confirmed as refunded, and none of the sources we checked mention compensation
- XP earn rates in BF6 have been changed and reverted before, including the XP Booster timer flip-flops in June
- You're still paying for every Mastery level with hours of real matches
Time vs Value: Your Options Ranked
The worked example above shows how much the cap mattered. At 300 XP per minute, a long, kill-heavy match pays the same as a quiet one. An hour gave you about 18,000 base weapon XP however well you played. Now that the cap is gone, skill and kill volume count again, so the question is how fast each option turns your hours into levels.
- Professional leveling: best if your time is limited. No hours from you, and it suits players who want several Season 5 guns finished.
- Bot lobbies: best for self-grinders. Our BF6 bot lobbiesfrom $14.99 average around 1,000–1,600 kills an hour, far more than a public match gives you, and you play the session yourself.
- Public matches during any double XP window: decent value now that earn rates are restored, but the payout depends on lobby quality.
- Portal experiences: the most unpredictable. Their payout rules vary, and some of the first cap reports came from there.
- Waiting for compensation: worst value. Nothing has been promised.
Our recommendation: casual players should restart, run the test and carry on grinding while the post-fix rates last. Completionists levelling all four new weapons get the most from bot lobbies. Players with very little playtime should let someone else do it.
If Nothing Works
If you've restarted, updated, tested in a core playlist and still see a clean 300-per-minute pattern, assume it's an account-side or regional problem that only DICE can fix. Follow Battlefield Comms on X for status updates, check the EA forums' Battlefield 6 Technical Issues board for matching reports, and contact EA Help with your evidence. Don't reinstall. The cap was never stored on your machine, so a reinstall won't change it.
Bottom Line
The Season 5 XP cap was real, it was server-side, and DICE says it's fixed. For nearly everyone, a full restart and one test match will confirm it. What the bug really cost was two days of throttled progression that probably won't come back, which makes how you spend your next hours of play more important.
Getting a weapon from scratch to Mastery 50 by hand still takes many hours of matches per gun, even at normal rates. If you'd rather not spend that time after the capped days, our Battlefield 6 weapon leveling servicefrom $19.99 can max out the guns you pick while you play the modes you actually enjoy.
