Can You Still Farm XP in Battlefield 6 Portal?
Mostly no. Custom Portal bot farms in BF6 now pay only a flat Career XP bonus and give almost no weapon mastery. Here's what still works in Season 4, ranked by XP per hour.

Mostly no. As of Season 4: Tidal Strike (Update 1.4.3.0), Custom "Modified XP" Portal servers pay a flat match-completion Career XP bonus and give almost no weapon mastery or assignment progress. Verified Portal servers still pay normal progression, but they aren't a shortcut.
The old trick of farming bots overnight to reach Mastery 50 doesn't work anymore. That leaves two real options: play live matches efficiently, which community estimates put at roughly 15–25 hours per weapon, or hand the grind to our Battlefield 6 weapon leveling boostfrom $19.99. Below I break down what changed, where sources disagree, and what an hour of play is actually worth with each method.
What changed in Portal
Portal's XP rules have changed several times since launch. Here's the order it happened in:
- October 2025: In BF6's second week, Portal filled up with bot farms, and DICE started changing custom-server progression on October 21. Servers with modified rules or bot spawns were labelled "Modified XP" and switched to a flat match-completion award, which PCGamesN reported as a 150% completion bonus.
- November 2025: Bots came back as backfill in Verified Conquest, Breakthrough and Rush, capped at 12 per server (six per team). Windows Central reported that bot kills pay much less XP.
- February 2026: EA briefly tested a 4-player minimum to start servers, then went back to the old thresholds, according to player reports on the EA forums.
- September 15, 2026: Tidal Strike added King of the Hill and Domination as Verified Modes in Portal.
The Full XP or Modified XP label in the browser tells you more than any server name, however good it sounds. Some servers advertise themselves as XP farms. If the label says Modified, your weapons will barely move.
Where sources disagree
The reporting on bot kills in Verified servers doesn't agree, so here are both sides. One September 2026 breakdown, written against Update 1.4.2.0, says Verified experiences pay standard Multiplayer rates whether you shoot humans or AI. Dexerto's July 2026 guide says bot kills in Portal pay reduced XP and that bot-enabled games need eight real players before they start. A few boosting sites also still call "verified bot lobbies" a fast route.
I can't settle that from public information, and EA adjusts these numbers often. My working assumption is that bot kills pay less than player kills. Test it before you commit an evening:
Two-minute test: Write down your weapon's mastery progress, play one full round on the server, then check it again. If the bar barely moved, leave. The server isn't worth your time, whatever its name says.
Every BF6 weapon XP method, ranked
Ranked from best to worst for weapon mastery specifically:
- Live Domination and other small objective modes. Constant flag trades mean constant score. In March 2026, Epiccarry estimated roughly 4,000–5,000 weapon XP per 10-minute Domination match. Treat that as a ballpark, since the tuning has changed since then.
- Breakthrough as Support in a full squad. Revives, resupplies and squad assists all feed XP to the weapon you have equipped, so you earn even when you're not fragging.
- Verified Portal servers with real players. These pay the same rates as normal matches and now include Domination and King of the Hill. The catch is that you need a lobby full of people.
- Verified Portal with bot backfill. This works, but most reports say bot kills are discounted. Use it as a filler, not a plan.
- Custom (Modified XP) farms and AFK servers. You get Career rank only. Kills don't count toward challenges and mastery barely moves. These servers are also often promoted by Discord servers promising "XP codes" that don't exist.
If your goal is weapon mastery, Portal farms rank last, because they now pay almost nothing on the one progress bar you care about.
Worked example: what an hour is worth
Say you want five weapons at Mastery 50 for their camos. At a midpoint of 20 hours per weapon, that's about 100 hours of focused live play. At 10 hours a week, that's ten weeks.
Now compare a Custom Portal farm. You could leave it running for 100 hours and still have almost no weapon mastery to show for it, because those servers pay out Career XP, not mastery. For this goal, an hour on one is worth close to zero.
It also helps to know where the real payoff is. Most of the key attachments unlock by around level 20, and the mastery camo only appears at 50. The last 30 levels are mostly cosmetic. Our Battlefield 6 weapon XP guide goes through those milestones level by level.
My recommendation by player type:
- You just want a competitive build: Play Domination or Breakthrough and stop at around level 20. Paying to skip that part isn't worth it.
- You enjoy the grind: Run Domination with an XP booster and skip Portal farms completely.
- You're chasing camos with limited time: This is where hours add up fastest, so outsourcing the 20→50 stretch makes the most sense.
Is XP farming risky?
Battlefield Studios has mostly fought farms by cutting their payouts, not by announcing bans, and it has taken down exploit-style setups. Still, anything tied to exploits carries some risk, and nobody can honestly promise zero risk. Our guide on BF6 boosting safety and ban risk covers what actually gets accounts flagged.
Related questions
Does Portal still give any XP? Yes, but on Modified XP servers you only get the flat match-completion Career XP. It raises your account rank, not your guns.
Do XP boosters work in Portal farms? Barely. Boosters multiply what the match pays, and a Modified XP farm pays very little weapon XP to begin with. Save your tokens for full-XP matches, and switch them on only once you're in a match, because the timers count down in real time.
Do bot kills count toward challenges? Not on Modified XP servers. Kills there don't count toward assignments, although some players report that certain daily objectives still tick over.
Is there Double XP right now? Tidal Strike ran a Double XP Weekend during the September 15–22 free trial, and that has ended. Check the in-game news tab for the next one, and play your longest sessions that weekend.
Bottom line
Portal is great for practice, custom rules and flying lessons, but it's no longer a way to farm weapon mastery. The most XP per hour comes from live objective play, and every hour you put into a Modified XP farm is an hour your weapons don't level.
Taking even a handful of weapons from 20 to 50 the legitimate way still means dozens of hours in live matches. If you'd rather spend that time just playing, our BF6 weapon leveling servicefrom $19.99 can take your guns to Mastery 50 for you.
